Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies are continuing in talks to trade Rudy Gay, and that the "final hurdle" is finding a third team to complete the deal.
From Wojnarowski's report:
The Grizzlies have inquired with multiple teams over the past several days, searching for a willing partner to facilitate a three-team deal, sources said.
Despite organizational proclamations to the contrary, new Memphis ownership and management is determined to unload Gay and the $37 million owed him as soon as possible, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The hard part for finding the third team is finding a good landing spot for Jose Calderon, since the Grizzlies are apparently unwilling to take Calderon and his $10mil expiring contract back in the trade.
One thing to remember with all of these trade rumors -- even ones like this, that seem very credible -- is that someone is leaking these things on purpose. They aren't just floating around waiting to be picked up by an intrepid gumshoe reporter. They're being intentionally leaked by one side or the other, trying to gain leverage. Which side is anyone's guess.
I did think this was interesting:
In a proposed deal, Memphis would likely receive another young Raptors player and a future draft pick, sources said. The Grizzlies have unsuccessfully tried to pry Raptors rookie Terrence Ross as part of the deal, sources said. Toronto has deemed Ross untouchable in these talks.
To me, that sounds like Toronto is using leaks to send a message, But we'll see. This latest report makes it sound like it's pretty conclusive that Gay is headed to Toronto, but I have a feeling we're not done thinking about Rudy Gay trade rumors yet.
You can bet Raptors HQ is covering this story as well.
