Although I can only source this rumor to one place, International Business Times, it is a rumor, nonetheless. A "reliable NBA insider" reported on Friday that the Nets could be preparing a package that would send Paul Pierce and draft picks to the Grizzlies in exchange for Zach Randolph, who finishes his current contract next year with a $17 million player option.
|2013 - Zach Randolph||24||32.7||6.4||14.2||45.0||0.0||0.3||0.0||3.6||4.8||75.7||2.7||7.2||9.8||2.2||2.7||0.6||0.1||3.0||16.4|
|2013 - Paul Pierce||21||29.7||4.0||9.6||41.6||1.4||3.9||35.4||3.8||4.5||85.1||0.3||5.0||5.4||3.0||2.6||0.9||0.1||2.4||13.2|
Some context to keep in mind: The season-ending injury to Brook Lopez could render all this discussion totally moot, and this rumor comes based off other "reports" that the organization considers Randolph dispensable with the emergence of Ed Davis and Jon Leuer.
My take: that's like saying I can still make banana pudding if I switch out the bananas for apples, oranges and strawberries. The Grizzlies' name has popped up around Paul Pierce trades for a couple of seasons now, and he's obviously someone that Chris Wallace has a great appreciate for, but I don't see how subbing Pierce for Randolph increases the chances of success for this season (although I'll admit I haven't examined any numbers). The draft picks are obviously something that would interest the Grizzlies new front office (they haven't had all too many or all too much luck with it the past few years ... in case you forgot).
