How much money did the Rudy Gay trade save the Grizzlies?

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

Ed Arnold of the Memphis Business Journal has a great breakdown of the Grizzlies’ salary before and after the trade of Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to the Toronto Raptors a couple weeks ago:

Before the trade, Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph made well over 60 percent off the Grizzlies total payroll. Total cost of payroll before the trade was $74,354,297.

After the trade, Gasol and Randolph still make the lion’s share of salary but the balance of payroll becomes more evenly distributed. Total cost of payroll after the trade is $62,294,877.

There are also some excellent graphs showing what percentage of the Grizzlies’ overall salary is taken up by which player’s salary. Non-shocking news: Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol make up almost half of the payroll.
