GBB Draft Profiles: Dewayne Dedmon

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

This is another installment in the ongoing look at Grizzlies prospects for the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft. This time we will be looking at Dewayne Dedmon.

Author's Note: The Grizzlies hold the 41st, 55th, and 60th picks in the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft. In the coming days, I will be doing player profiles for domestic players only. All the profiles will be on players the Grizzlies have a realistic shot of drafting.

Dewayne Dedmon

23 Years Old, 6'11", 239 lbs., C, University of Southern California

Best Song for a Future Highlight Reel: "California Love" - 2Pac

What He Brings to the Table: Backup Center, Size, Mobility, Athleticism, Rebounding, Defense, Potential

What He Lacks: Ability to Stay Out of Foul Trouble, Refined Offensive Game, Consistent Shooting Mechanics

Best-Case Comparison: Marcin Gortat*

Worst-Case Comparison: Hasheem Thabeet*

Obligatory Highlight Reel:

Why the Grizzlies Ought to Draft Him (for Basketball Reasons): The Grizzlies are in need of a backup center for Marc Gasol, and they are also looking to get more mobile in the front court. Dedmon fits the bill for both of those. The big man can get up and down the court with ease. He also plays good defense, rebounds well, blocks a lot of shots, and generally fits with the Grizzlies style of play at least defensively. The Grizzlies have already worked out Dedmon, and there seems to be some real interest there because of his potential. Dedmon's game has a lot of room for development, which could be promising or troubling depending on how you view things. Another issue is that he is an older player for someone that just finished his junior year in college. By the time he prospectively starts his NBA career, he will be 24 years old. That's not great, but the Grizzlies can afford to take a flyer on him with either pick 55 or 60. If Dedmon could come in and just develop one consistent offensive skill, whether that be a midrange jumper or a post game, he could be a valuable third big man for his career. Also, Dedmon has been through a lot, and has showed he can overcome adversity. He started playing basketball when he was 18 years old, and his game has already developed so much. I can't imagine his game after a season or two with NBA coaching. Check out his story below.

Why the Grizzlies Ought to Draft Him (for non-Basketball Reasons): Being able to combine the word "Double" and the letter "D" is every teenage boy's dream. Well, Dedmon's nickname could easily be "Double D", which would make teenage Grizzlies fans go nuts. I can already see a future game giveaway being a bra that has his number on each of the cups. Or not because that would be creepy. Forget what I said.

Mock Draft Predictions: Pick 50 Atlanta (DraftExpress), Pick 60 Grizzlies (NBADraft.net)

*- For the record, I hate making player comparisons. I just don't think it is fair. That amateur player could forever be linked to another player via comparison, and that's not fair. That player plays like himself and not anybody else. Also, player comparisons have a tendency to be wildly inaccurate and get fans' hopes up only to be let down later. I think it's best to look at what *that player* can do, and not what he can do comparatively. Will he add value to the Grizzlies? If so, that's all I care about. However, I know fans eat player comparison up, and it gives people something that is easy to relate to. It gives people who are not into scouting amateurs an idea of what the player will become. So, for the sake of these profiles, I will continue to do player comparisons as accurately as I can. I do actually try. I don't just blindly throw someone's name up there. All I'm saying here is in the future don't hold me accountable for these projections. At the end of the day, Dewayne Dedmon is going to be Dewayne Dedmon, etc. etc.
