Tonight, Jason Levien, Stu Lash, John Hollinger, Chris Wallace and the rest of the front office personnel will be huddled up around a table furiously working the phone lines trying to wiggle the Grizzlies into a first round pick, discussing prospects, and, most importantly, finalizing who is going to play an instrumental role in the team's future.
Front offices always play coy to keep their draft day strategies close to vest, and the Grizzlies have been no different. You can go on NBA.com's Grizzlies team page and watch all of the pre-draft workout videos and interviews with Stu Lash, and you still won't have any more of a clue what the team's plan is for Thursday night. If their's one constant about the NBA Draft every year, it's that there are always surprises. There's always going to be unexpected trades made, players selected much higher than expected, and highly touted players sliding right down the draft board. That much is inevitable.
However, just because the Grizzlies front office has guarded their strategy, it might not be entirely impossible to see which direction they plan to go. First, let's check out everybody the Grizzlies worked out.
Pre-Draft Workout Day 1: Jud Dillard, Carrick Felix, Solomon Hill, Ricky Ledo, Angelo Sharpless, Tony Snell
Pre-Draft Workout Day 2: James Southerland, Will Clyburn, BJ Young, Dewayne Dedmon, Colton Iverson, Sherwood Brown
Pre-Draft Workout Day 3: Robert Covington, Gregory Echenique, Archie Goodwin, Murphy Holloway, Brandon Paul, Christian Watford
Pre-Draft Workout Day 4: Jordan Aboudou, Julian Gamble, Murphy Holloway, Jason Jones, Romero Osby, Peyton Siva
Pre-Draft Workout Day 5: Brandon Davies, Erick Green, Elias Harris, Jason Jones, Mareks Mejeris, D.J. Stephens
Pre-Draft Workout Day 6: Jordan Aboudou, Vander Blue, Jackie Carmichael, Joffrey Lauvergne, Jannis Tima, Adonis Thomas, Mitchell Anderson Jr., Jack Cooley, Arsalan Kazemi
The players I have bolded from the workouts are the guys the Grizzlies seem to be the highest on. Below, I have compiled a list of players that either make sense for the Grizzlies or that the front office seems to admire after workouts, interviews, and heading into tonight. By no means do I claim that the list is the Grizzlies actual draft board. Knowing the draft, the Grizzlies will pick none of the guys on the list, and I'll look like an idiot which is just as well.
Grizzlies Draft Board
It is near impossible to predict the Grizzlies actual draft board, but my best guess is that these ten guys have a decent shot at getting drafted by Memphis tonight. I would be surprised if at least one of the three players the Grizzlies take is not on this list of ten players if they have the opportunity to take any of them. Also, there's been rumblings of the Grizzlies working the phone trying to get into the first round. I would suspect that has a lot to do with where Erick Green and/or Ricky Ledo are expected to be taken. Lastly, expect at least one European player to be taken to be stashed overseas to develop. There is no way the Grizzlies will put three draft picks on the roster for next season.
That's enough speculating. Now, all we can do is tune in tonight to see what the Grizzlies actually do. It's sure to be a nerve-wracking blast!
