ESPN's Marc Stein, hot on the heels of reporting that Griz brass met with Mike Miller, reported that the trade was in the works last night:
Calathes is a Euro point guard, and the prevailing wisdom is that he's being brought in as "Tony Wroten insurance," just in case the second-year Griz guard can't hack it this year.
And, yes, yet again, the Grizzlies are looking to bring in a guard who can't shoot.
Grizz stay collecting guards that can't shoot. I like Calathes, but Memphis needs to stop voluntarily killing its spacing.— Jared Dubin (@JADubin5) July 22, 2013
According to Memphis radio host Chris Vernon, the trade will be completed today:
Grizzlies will complete trade for Nick Calathes today. Will give Dallas 2016 2nd Rd pick (which Mavs already had, but now no restrictions)— Chris Vernon (@ChrisVernonShow) July 22, 2013
Sources say 60/40 chance Calathes comes over to Grizz this year - and that this has no effect on Mike Miller pusuit.— Chris Vernon (@ChrisVernonShow) July 22, 2013
The Memphis Flyer's Chris Herrington had more to add about Calathes' contract situation:
Re: Calathes. I'm told he has a "reasonable buyout" for last year of Euro contract but it's still uncertain whether he'll be over this year.— Chris Herrington (@FlyerGrizBlog) July 22, 2013
