Grizzlies 88 - Rockets 87
Well, my goodness. That was something else, wasn't it? I'm still trying to process what I witnessed tonight, but basically the Grizzlies survived the ultimate video game performance from Chandler Parsons, who hit 10 consecutive 3pointers in the 2nd half, and brought back a nice mix of Grit'n'Grind defense to close out the game.
Just about everyone for the Griz got involved tonight and made some big plays. Mike Conley made some amazing shots, Zach Randolph founds spurts of dominance and helped get D12 into foul trouble, Tayshaun Prince secured a huge rebound at the end of the game, James Johnson did his usual Bloodsport thang and took over for a bit in the 4th Q.
But the player of the game has to be Courtney Lee - 19 points on 6/9 shooting and a perfect 6/6 from the FT line. I know Lee is due to level out and it'll be hard to find him this much playing time with the eventual return of Tony Allen, but damn... the guy is playing really well right now and has been a creamy, soothing salve for some of the Grizzlies perimeter shooting problems.
Regardless of how the logjams play out, the Grizzlies appear to have honed their identity into something resembling the tenacious GnG Griz of old and something ... different? Something that's becoming pretty darn fun to watch.
Celebrate!! The Grizzlies have now won their first division game of the 2013-14 season! Not only that, the Grizzlies notched their 7th victory in Houston as a franchise. It's not something that's ever come easy to the Griz, and the fact that this squad accomplished the feat bodes well for the magic they need to continue to work in the second half of the season. They held Dwight Howard and James Harden to a combined 21 points, and if it hadn't been for the Parsons explosion the Grizzlies probably would have handedly won this one.
