2014 NBA Draft: Memphis Grizzlies select Jordan Adams 22nd overall: Analysis and Reaction

Jordan Adams: good player, but a good fit? - Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODA

The Memphis Grizzlies made a bold selection when they took Jordan Adams 22nd overall. How does he impact the Bears of Beale Street now and in the future?

It has been stated repeatedly that if the Grizzlies are to compete this coming season, they need immediate help on the wing, a player who can space the floor and can play the true Small Forward position immediately. Rodney Hood, Cleanthony Early and Kyle Anderson were all ripe for the picking for the Grizzlies, and it appeared that the gap may finally be filled.

Of course, then the Grizzlies do none of those things with their pick.

Jordan Adams of UCLA, is a 6'4" player who can score the basketball (17.4 points per game this past season), get to the free throw line and convert at a high clip (5 attempts and 84% shooter) and is an analytic darling; his 28.7 Player Efficiency Rating, or PER, of 28.7 is astronomical.

Ir bears noting that PER was created by John Hollinger, a key cog in the Grizzlies' Front Office "Machine." Hollinger undoubtedly player a huge role in this selection, and there is no doubt he checks off the "get to the free throw line" box on the Grizzlies' off-season check list. He averaged five rebounds, which is a big number for a shooting guard, and also a little bit over 2 assists per game while shooting 36% from the three point line.

Offensively, he fills some needs. He is not a Small Forward, however, and this is troubling. Of course Memphis could make a deal down the line, and free agency looms next week. If Adams was the best on the board, the Grizzlies had to make the pick. It undoubtedly has some Grizzlies fans scratching their heads and pondering the future of Quincy Pondexter, Courtney Lee or even Tony Allen on this Memphis roster given the logjam at the Shooting Guard position.

He is a good player, but how good of a fit? Will he stay in Memphis or is he a part of a future deal? Remains to be seen.

UCLA guard Jordan Adams is a scorer through and through, ranking as one of college basketball's best last season with a 7.4 PPG average and a 0.60 TS%. He's athletic and active off the ball, but the outside jumper is a touch inconsistent. Adams should give the Grizzlies' bench a scoring punch, but while the upside is definitely there, it remains to be seen just how ready he is to play minutes for this team.
