Joe's 'Nax & 'Wax and I all discussed some of the Memphis Grizzlies Summer League action last night on GBBLive. BluesCityJoe pointed out that, up until his performance last night, Jamaal Franklin had been a bit of a disappointment in his 2nd Summer League stint. Franklin looked unsure, passive and wasn't executing like a player who has actually logged NBA minutes.
Well, the Grindson felt the pressure, heard the groans and obviously knew that he could step it up against the scrubbish competition of SL. Step up he did as Jamaal finished with 17 pts on 5/9 shooting, 6/7 from the FT line, a block, a steal and a +18 overall on the night. Perhaps Franklin remembered the story of Tony Wroten and how he feel out of favor with the organization after a dismal Summer League. Maybe he's ready to take the next step in the upcoming season.
Speaking of that steal he logged. Anyone notice the video up top? Sick.
I had previously discussed with Adam Rubrum about how, outside of Kosta Koufos and Quincy Pondexter, the Grizzlies weren't working with a lot of highlight dunkers next season if their roster stands as constructed.
We might have a couple of names to add to the hat from what I've seen in Grizzlies Summer League. Jarnell Stokes and now Jamaal Franklin both have some of the athleticism that would be a nice compliment to what the Grizzlies currently put out on the court.
There's been some nice overall surprises this year in Orlando. Jarnell Stokes, Jordan Adams, Kalin Lucas, Jack Cooley, Okaro White and now Jamaal Franklin have all shined periodically and shown they have some valuable skills that can be utilized either on the Grizzlies roster in some fashion or at least help round out the Iowa Energy's roster as the organization steps into their first season with a single D-League affiliate.
The Memphis Grizzlies play the Philadelphia 76ers for the Orlando Summer League Championship today at 11:00AM CT. Stay tuned on the site for a GameThread to discuss the action!
