With the 9th pick in the GBB Community NBA Mock Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select:

9) Nik Stauskas, SG, Michigan

Charlotte's biggest need is perimeter shooting. They ranked 27th in the NBA in number of 3FGA and a meager 23rd in 3FG% in the 2013-14 regular season. Nik Stauskas is a deadeye shooter, and he would fit like a glove on the current Hornets roster.

If the draft falls how this community mock draft has, Stauskas will be a perfect option for the Hornets with the 9th pick. He's probably the best pure shooter in this year's loaded draft. He once did this...

Holy moly. Although Stauskas' shooting is far and away his most talked about skill, he's far from a one-dimensional offensive player. He's demonstrated the ability to create his own shot, which will certainly be necessary with NBA shooting guards defending him. Stauskas' step-back jumper is so quick that defenders are often left with no hope of getting a hand up to contest his shot. If a defender closes out too hard, Stauskas couples an explosive first step with long strides to get to the rim. He finishes well at the rim when he gets there, too.

To recap Stauskas' offensive game, he will nail a three if his man gives him any space, but he will blow right by his man if he gets too close. That skill set will make him tough to guard in the NBA, and the Hornets will welcome his scoring and ability to space the floor.

As can be said about every NBA draft prospect, Stauskas is not without flaws. He struggles defensively, not always positioning himself correctly in help defense. He's also shown to be mediocre at best in man-to-man schemes. That's not a killer, but that is something his coaches will need to work on with him when he makes it to the Association so he doesn't get eaten alive every night.

There aren't many men better equipped to help Stauskas reach his defensive potential than Hornets head coach Steve Clifford. Last season, in his first as the Bobcats head coach, Clifford's defense surprised everyone with its outstanding level of play. Surrounding Stauskas with a lot of guys that have really bought into the level of effort and intensity Clifford demands defensively is a pragmatic, smart strategy.

To achieve his full potential, Stauskas will need to add some muscle and get stronger, but there are countless other guys that could be said for, too. #MuscleWatch

Despite Stauskas' defensive woes, his multi-faceted offensive game, high basketball IQ, and excellent feel for the game have skyrocketed him up team's draft boards. The Hornets would consider themselves lucky to grab a guy like Stauskas with the 9th pick.
