Eric Gordon, Rudy Gay, James Harden, Andre Iguodala and Anthony Davis will battle for final two spots on Olympic Team, source told CBSSports— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanCBS) July 3, 2012
Now, I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Anthony Davis has been ruled out of the 2012 Olympics because of a sprained ankle. So it would appear as if Rudy is vying for one of the final two spots among a short list of four players. Fifty percent chance!
I'm not speaking as someone with any insider knowledge here, but it would seem to me as if Rudy has the upper hand. Now, when you consider that the team has only three legitimate big men on its roster -- Tyson Chandler, Blake Griffin and Kevin Love, with the possibility of DeMarcus Cousins, maybe? -- you would think that Rudy, as a 6-9 wing who could slide over and play some power forward, might be a favorite to make the team. I mean, you can only have so many scoring wings, right?
I'm rooting for him to make the team, though of course you do have to worry slightly about the possibility of an injury. Still, the experience he'll gain this summer as a member of the USA Men's Basketball Team would only help next Fall when, hopefully, can bring that winning spirit to the Grizzlies locker room.
