I've got good news and bad news. We'll start with the bad.
According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, Marc Gasol has a "Grade 2 media collateral ligament sprain in his left knee" and will be out indefinitely.
The good news is that Gasol won't require surgery which would have likely sidelined him for the entire season. As far as recovery time, nobody really knows. Tillery provides perspective on time based on two Griz players who suffered the same injury.
Pondexter missed slightly less than 8 weeks with same injury. ZBo missed roughly 10 weeks with same injury as Gasol. CA story coming...— Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBeat) November 23, 2013
While this news is tough to bear as the Grizzlies were catching their stride after a slow start, having Kosta Koufos softens the loss in ways this team couldn't have in the past years. Last season for the Denver Nuggets Kosta started 81 games and averaged 8 points and 6.9 rebounds on 22 minutes a game. He won't be able to provide what Gasol does to this offense, but he's capable of keeping the defense somewhat in tact. Offensively the starters around him and the bench (especially the bench) will have to increase their output attempting to even things out.
Get well Big Spain.
