Melo had a decent year in the NBA D-League last year, averaging 9.8 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 3.1 BPG while playing for the Maine Red Claws. The second-year center out of Syracuse only played in six NBA games in his rookie season with the Boston Celtics, and he never scored more than two points in a single game.
As a young player, Melo's play is seen as too inconsistent to give him a roster spot, which certainly played into the Celtics and Grizzlies both getting rid of him. Also, Melo's maturity level and ability to handle his emotions has always been a problem as well. That seemed to be more prevalent at Syracuse, but when you're in the D-League, you are not exactly in the spotlight. His attitude could have played into the Grizzlies decision as well.
This seems to be an odd move given the Grizzlies just signed him about two weeks ago. Also, if no other team claims Melo off waivers, then the Grizzlies are stuck paying his $1.3 million salary.
