As expected, Griz finalize coaching staff with assistants Elston Turner, Bob Thornton, Duane Ticknor and Shawn Respert.

This is called, it's pretty much the greatest website on earth.

Here's a bit on each coach:

  • Elston Turner - an interesting addition, a former NBA player that has been interviewing for head coaching vacancies since 2008 but has yet to been given a shot. He has spent the past few years in Phoenix as an assistant for the Suns before resigning in January.
  • Bob Thorton - a former NBA player that has been an assistant for the Griz since 2011 after scouting for OKC and working his way up through the minor league coaching tree.
  • Duane Ticknor - another interesting hire from back in the summer. Ticknor took over head coaching duties at the D-League's Dakota Wizards once Joerger was hired by the Grizzlies in 2007. Ticknor spent 3 years there before moving to his most recent position at head coach for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, a team Joerger also coached. Their ties go back as far as 1999 when they both were assistants for Dakota.
  • Shawn Respert - another former player who was the 8th overall pick in 1995. As a coach, he worked his way up through the college and D-League ranks before assisting at Houston and Minnesota in the NBA. Respert is a player development specialist, so here's praying his is able to work some magic on Jamaal Franklin, Ed Davis and others.

I'm not going to pretend to know more about these men than the brief research I did earlier, but I'm sure there will be a bit more to come out and enlighten us in the coming weeks.

Update: Here's a much more thorough profiling of the coaches at the Grizzlies website.
