Grizzlies-Kings Recap: Sleepy Grizzlies fend off Boogie-less Kings

The Grizzlies looked like a team in the second game of a road back-to-back but, led by Mike Conley's 27 points and 10 assists, took care of business against a pesky Kings team 99-89.

1st Quarter

The Grizzlies looked a little lethargic to start the second game of a road back-to-back as a sharp-executing Kings lineup pulled out to an early 14-8 lead before the Grizzlies started grinding and pulled to 16-16 at the 4:34 mark.  The Grizzlies and Kings traded buckets for the rest of the quarter, the Grizzlies finishing ahead 25-24.

First Quarter Highlight: Grizzlies shooting 56%

First Quarter Grinder: Marc Gasol (8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, 4-6 FG)

2nd Quarter

The Grizzlies pushed out to a pair of 5 point leads at 35-30 and 39-34 and 6 point lead at 46-50, but the second quarter was a continuation of the sluggish first and ended with the Grizzlies up 2, 48-46.  No Grizzlies finished the half in double digits, while both Isaiah Thomas and Rudy Gay had 12 at the half for the Kings.

Second Quarter Highlight: Mike Conley with a gorgeous whirling dervish of a semi-hook in traffic.

First Half Grinder: Mike Conley (7 points, 1 rebound, 5 assists)

3rd Quarter

It continued to be a back-and-forth scuffle through the third, as Tayshaun Prince and the Grizzlies struggled to contain Rudy Gay (19 points through 3), but the Kings struggled equally to contain Michael Conley, jr.  Marc Gasol spent a fair amount of time at about the 3 minute mark feeling around his left knee and making Griz Nation nervous.  The lead changed hands a few times, but the Grizzlies mostly maintained a slim lead throughout and finished the quarter up 6, 69-63.

Third Quarter Highlight: Z-Bo with a steal and finish on a "fast" break.

Third Quarter Grinder: Mike Conley again (11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 5-7 FG)

4th Quarter

For starters, it appeared they readjusted Marc's knee brace and sleeve which may have been all the knee-feeling in the 3rd quarter was about.  The ball movement, execution, and crispness seemed to be amped up early in the quarter as the Grizzlies extended their lead to 9, 76-67.  The lead was shrunk to 6 before being extended out to 10, 82-72, with 7:21 left.  The Kings did not give up, continuing to attack and cutting the lead to 3, 84-81, with 4:25 remaining.  After trading buckets, 3 baskets in a minute of game time by Tayshaun Prince pushed the lead to 10, 97-87 with 1:36 left.  Mike Miller left the game with a hand injury with about 1:20 remaining, heading straight to the locker room and appearing to be in a lot of pain.  The Grizzlies ground it out to the buzzer, winning 99-89.

Fourth Quarter Highlight: The Grizzlies getting out of Dodge with a win.

Second Half Grinder: Mike Conley (20 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals)
