Reports are emerging that the Grizzlies have agreed to trade Jerryd Bayless to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Courtney Lee. The deal is scheduled to be completed tomorrow afternoon. No pick is currently being reported.
Bayless is a streaky scorer, and when he goes cold, he goes ice cold. He had struggled all season with his shot, and even though had progressed lately, was still shooting well below his career norms at 37.5% from the field and 28.8% from the 3-point line. Lee is a 6'5 shooting guard, shooting 49% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc. He is also currently under contract for the next two season for $5.4 million and $5.675 million respectively.
My initial reaction is that the Grizzlies improved their ability to score the ball from beyond the arc, but they also added a $11 million over the next two years, assuming they don't absorb it with their trade exception. If they do, then the salary isn't that hard to stomach, not so much as the extra minutes that will be given to Nick Calathes will be. With no other point guard on the roster, Calathes will be forced into covering for Conley for longer stretches, or until another move is made.
We'll have more on this as it develops into the night and becomes official tomorrow, but for now, it certainly looks like JB is headed to Boston. What do you think, Griz fans?
