Seth Curry waived before deadline; Grizz may re-sign if he clears waivers

ESPN's Marc Stein reports the Grizzlies have waived Seth Curry in advance of his contract becoming guaranteed. If he clears waivers, they will try to re-sign him.

Shortly before breaking the news of the Jerryd Bayless-Courtney Lee trade, ESPN's Marc Stein tweeted out that the Memphis Grizzlies have waived Seth Curry and his unguaranteed contract:

Stein also added that the Grizzlies will try to re-sign Curry to a 10-day contract if he clears waivers.

Signed by the Grizzlies on December 24th, Seth Curry finally made his debut in a Grizzlies uniform earlier today against the Detroit Pistons. In 4:05 of playing time, he failed to record a single statistic in the box score (he did have a plus/minus of 6, albeit in garbage time). Curry averaged 21.3 points on 43.9% shooting from the field to go with 7.8 assists and 2.1 threes in 12 games for the D-League's Santa Cruz Warriors. The brother of the Golden State Warriors' Steph Curry went undrafted last year.

With Jerryd Bayless gone, there may be a chance for Curry when/if he's brought back to see some time at point guard as the third-string behind Nick Calathes. One would presume that the Grizzlies aren't finished making moves, however, as Calathes hasn't appeared to be a reliable player in the third-string role he's played in so far.

The deadline date for unguaranteed contracts becoming guaranteed also applies to James Johnson. Unsurprisingly, it looks like the Grizzlies will elect to keep him through the deadline given his outstanding performance so far.
