Memphis Grizzlies waive Earl Clark, Hassan Whiteside, roster down to 16

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

Via press release, the Memphis Grizzlies have officially announced the releases of forward Earl Clark and center Hassan Whiteside.

Both signed in the off-season to training camp deals, Clark and Whiteside -- along with several others -- were brought in compete for the Grizzlies final roster spot.

With the release of Michael Beasley earlier in the preseason, there was some optimism surrounding Earl Clark's chances to make the final roster, fitting considering his abilities to act as a stretch four. Appearing in four preseason games, Clark averaged 5.25 points on 47 percent shooting, 2.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1 steal per game as a Grizzly.

For Hassan Whiteside, a 7'0 foot center with two years of NBA experience with the Sacramento Kings, the odds weren't in his favor due to depth in the frontcourt. Through five preseason games, Whiteside averaged 3.4 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block in 39 minutes of play.

The Grizzlies roster is now down to 16 -- the league limit for players in the regular season is 15.
