Iowa Energy Preseason Game in Memphis
Both Grizzlies and Energy fans based in Memphis will have the opportunity to watch some NBA D-League action at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, November 8 at FedExForum. The Iowa Energy (Grizzlies' NBA Development League affiliate - shame on you if you still didn't know it) will take on the Miami Heat's affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Doors open at 4 p.m. CT.
From $10 (General Admission Plaza tickets) to $25 (floor seats) you can take a glimpse of the first steps of the Iowa Energy team. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 24 at 10 a.m. Check out grizzlies.com for more info about it.
Wait a minute. You probably are thinking, "but November 8 is when the Grizzlies take on the Bucks (the seventh game of the regular season already) at 7:30 p.m. at the HMO Bradley Center in Milwaukee?" That's right. The Iowa Energy and the Memphis Grizzlies play both in the same day. What a paradisiacal afternoon-evening! You can watch just two games at FedExForum, as you are encouraged to stay after the Energy game for a Grizzlies Watch Party to see how the big fellas tear up the Bucks in the once upon a time "beer capital of the world".
Iowa Energy roster situation
The D-League season will start on November 14, and the roster situation is still unknown, (or at least that's the best info I could get living 4374 miles far away of Des Moines as I do). But hey, my sources are good, and maybe with these words that a staff member of the Iowa Energy emailed me, you will also understand better how the Energy roster is currently taking shape.
"Right now our roster situation is unknown. We own the rights to everyone who finished the season with us last year should they choose to come back to the D-League. The D-League will be holding a draft after the final roster cuts are made by the NBA teams. This along with returning players and any potential open tryout players will compose our training camp roster. At this point we don't know who will be returning. We will then have to cut it to 10 players."
Here you can see the last year's roster:
The insightful message was sent to me the day before starting the open tryout players on October 11 in Memphis. So maybe now some unexpected star that shone in the tryouts is waiting to see his name in the Iowa Energy final roster and he is already training really hard to be ready for the 2014-2015 NBA D-League season. Maybe.
Anyway, here you can see and watch some hints of what happened in the open tryout players hosted in Memphis and Des Moines:
2014 NBA Development League Draft
The NBA D-League Draft will take place on Saturday, November 1 at 3:30 p.m. ET from the NBA studios in Secaucus, New Jersey. The Draft consists of eight rounds of picks, and the team selection order is determined based on the reverse order of 2013-2014 regular season results (more or less it follows the same science as their big brothers' draft). Following the Draft, on November 2 training camps will begin, and teams will trim their rosters to 10 players on November 13, ready to start the season on Friday, November 14.
James Johnson was the No. 2 pick in the 2013 NBA D-League Draft before being called up by the Grizzlies.
As things are right now (trades can happen), the order for the first round of the 2014 NBA D-League Draft is the following:
1. Gran Rapids Drive (from Delaware)
2. Santa Cruz Warriors (from Erie)
3. Austin Spurs (from Maine)
4. Santa Cruz Warriors (from Maine)
5. Grand Rapids Drive
6. Texas Legends
7. Idaho Stampede
8. Bakersfield Jam
9. Oklahoma City Blue
10. Westchester Knicks
11. Reno Bighorns
12. Canton Charge
13. Santa Cruz Warriors
14. Rio Grande Valley Vipers
