Grizzlies Report Card
Grizzlies 97 - Bulls 103
Coach Dave Joerger:
"Guts Over Fear" by Eminem ft. Sia (NSFW)
The Grizzlies could easily have gotten blown out in this game, but Coach Joerger was making such gutsy decisions all throughout the second half. When the Grizzlies were trailing by 10, he could have gotten scared, but instead he stuck with a lineup made up mostly of bench guys. He let Nick Calathes stick Jimmy Butler, and it worked for the most part. I think the best part of his game was Joerger keeping the starters' minutes under control so maybe they'll be fresh for the Cavs on Sunday.
Mike Conley: 32 MINS | 21 PTS | 7-18 FGS | 2 ASTS | -6
"Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift
Mike shook off his rough start to help drag the Grizzlies back into the game in the fourth. Taylor Swift was singing about shaking her haters off (I can't imagine who hates Taylor Swift), but Conley had to deal with exhaustion and poor shooting early in the game. As per usual, he showed up when the Grizzlies needed him the most and added to the lore of Clutch Conley.
Courtney Lee: 30 MINS | 7 PTS | 3-9 FGS | 2 REBS | +10
"Hey Ya" by Outkast
Oh you think you got it with two open threes late in the fourth quarter? More like you were just ice cold. At times, aggressive Courtney showed up to play, but once he started missing shots he was done. Courtney needed to borrow some of Vince's confidence against the Bulls. I think that would have helped him a bit. I struggled to find a song for Courtney so I picked this one because Outkast is the GOAT and they scream ICE COLD like four times.
Tayshaun Prince: 24 MINS | 8 PTS | 3-8 FGS | 1 REB | -4
"Work" by Iggy Azalea (NSFW)
Tayshaun's transformation is still a work in progress. He was stuck in his old role and forced away from the corners by a good Bulls defense. Tayshaun is working on his game and it's evident. I think he should be an everyday player to get him in a groove, but playing the match ups has been working so what do I know?
Zach Randolph: 22 MINS | 8 PTS | 4-11 FGS | 12 REBS | -1
"Problem" by Ariana Grande
The Grizzlies had a host of problems against the Bulls, but they had one less with Zach Randolph on the bench. Nikola Mirotic was able to get hot as the sun while Z-Bo was trying to follow him around the court and it cost the Grizz late in the game. I think that Randolph was exhausted like the rest of the Grizzlies so chasing Mirotic around the court was probably not on his to do list coming into tonight.
Marc Gasol: 30 MINS | 13 PTS | 5-15 FGS | 10 REBS | +1
"Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J
Marc looked like he had been up partying since the triple overtime win against the Spurs. His shots were falling short, defense involved bludgeoning the opponent, and you could tell that he was struggling. I don't think he felt like he wanted anything to do with Pau tonight so he just slapped him around a couple times. The last five minutes came and Marc stepped into the game ready to win it. He posterized some poor soul on the Bulls and was dishing the ball around to open guys. The Grizz couldn't get back into the game, but Gasol redeemed himself a bit.
Beno Udrih: 20 MIN | 15 PTS | 5-8 FGS | 2 STLS | -3
"Blue Train" by John Coltrane
I want you to close your eyes and just imagine Beno playing basketball with some smooth jazz behind him. It's a perfect fit. The leaners off the pick and roll and nifty layups in the lane were in full effect against Aaron Brooks and crew. Nobody on that Bulls bench could guard Beno and he kept the struggling Grizz in the game for a while. Unfortunately, he jammed his finger on a loose ball and it knocked him out of the game. GET WELL SOON BENO!
Vince Carter: 22 MINS | 10 PTS| 4-9 FGS | 2 REBS | -9
"I'll Be There For You" by Bon Jovi
The Grizzlies offense needed someone that could create their own shot and Vince was there for the team. His ability to score off the dribble sometimes is so valuable to this team right now when everyone is cold-as-an-Idaho-well-digger's-butt.
(Ed. note: What did I just read?)
Kosta Koufos: 18 MINS | 4 PTS | 2-6 FGS | 8 REBS | 3 BLKS | -3
"Hard" by Rihanna
The Grizzlies needed someone to come in and provide some toughness, so Koufos did just that. He went in against a good Bulls front line and played and acted hard, both things he usually does. One of these days, Coach Joerger will rest Gasol, and Koufos will start, AND KOUFOS WILL DESTROY ANYONE WHO GETS IN HIS WAY. Imagine Kosta on a tank. I feel like he may own one and we may not know about it.
Jon Leuer: 21 MINS | 6 PTS | 3-5 FGS| 4 REBS| -5
"Greased Lightning" by The Cast of Grease
Jon Leuer is about as fast as greased lightning and he was showing it off against a slow Bulls front line. This video and Jon Leuer are probably the whitest things you'll see all week.
Quincy Pondexter: 15 MINS | 2 PTS | 0-2 FGS | 3 REBS | -4
"Better Dayz" by Tupac (NSFW)
I'm sure Quincy is longing for the better days when he could hit shots or play good defense. The player once touted as the gem of the Grizzlies looks unsure and seems to be searching for his role on the team. He has officially entered "WHAT DO YOU DO???????" territory. Quincy has had much, much better days, but I'm not sure if any more are on the horizon.
Nick Calathes: 7 MIN | 3 PTS | 1-3 FGS | 1 AST | +2
Not able to be graded
I don't like grading guys that played under 10 minutes. Nick came into the game with 7 minutes left, played well on defense, and made two good offensive plays. I think his jumpshot is one of the main reasons Coach Joerger is keeping him tied to the bench.
