Grizzlies Report Card
Grizzlies 95 - Spurs 87
Coach Dave Joerger:
Be prepared for this next sentence. Alright are you sitting down? OK here it is. Coach Dave Joerger out coached Coach Greg Popovich tonight. It wasn't really close. He was calling run ending timeouts to stifle the Spurs offense and was playing the matchups like...you guessed it, Popovich. It was a performance that was clearly mimicking someone Coach Joerger has modeled his coaching style after. Using Jarnell Stokes as a "Splitter stopper" was a ballsy move that worked out and I think we'll see him use in the future.
Mike Conley: 33 MINS | 30 PTS | 10-13 FGS | 7 REBS | 6 ASTS | +9
Mike missed three shots? I don't believe that for one second. It seemed like every shot he was putting up was going in. He was draining threes and using his insane speed to get to the basket. Nobody on the Spurs could stop him and it was obvious. If Tony Parker had been playing he'd be making that face that makes me think he's about to cry. I'm all aboard the Mike Conley All-Star train. It's time for everyone to join me.
Courtney Lee: 31 MINS | 8 PTS | 3-9 FGS | 5 ASTS | 4 REBS | +6
The shots weren't falling, but CLee found ways to be successful. He picked apart the defense with great passing and played great perimeter defense (something that's been lacking over the last few weeks).
Tony Allen: 28 MINS | 7 PTS | 3-8 FGS | 3 STLS | +7
TONY ALLEN GIVETH AND TONY ALLEN GIVETH AWAY. As per the usual Tony was all over the place against the Spurs. The defense that made Memphis fall in love with him finally returned after a two game break and he was once again a one man wrecking crew.
Jon Leuer: 10 MINS | 4 PTS | 2-4 FGS | 2 REBS | +1
He played ten minutes? Seemed like less. When he was in he had two turnovers and three fouls. It wasn't an ideal game for Jonny. I wouldn't be surprised if he sees the floor against the Spurs again.
Marc Gasol: 37 MINS | 17 PTS | 6-12 FGS | 9 REBS | 5 ASTS | +10
Marc Gasol is.... I can't.... It's a pleasure to watch Marc Gasol play the game of basketball. I don't think a center in teh game today affects the game quite like he does. The offense runs through and around him while the defense depends on him. HIs shot attempts were limited, but he made the most of what he had. I think the intense, crazy and amazing defense he played may have tired him a bit on the offensive end.
Tayshaun Prince: 34 MINS | 12 PTS | 4-7 FGS | 6 REBS | +5
THE TAYSHAUNAISSANCE CONTINUES! Coach Joerger used him primarily as a stretch four and matched him up with Boris Diaw. And it worked perfectly. His defense was great and he cleaned up on the boards for a second unit that needed a rebounder with Gasol and Koufos occupied on defense.
Kosta Koufos: 12 MINS | 6 PTS | 3-4 FGS | 2 BLKS | -4
Kosta just flicks the ball into the basket. He doesn't require the tough around the rim that Z-Bo has (even though he has it a bit). Koufos defense kept the Grizzlies defense intense and focussed with Gasol off the court which is important considering how dangerous the Spurs second unit is.
Quincy Pondexter: 19 MINS | 6 PTS | 2-3 FGS | 1 AST | +2
This was bounce back game for Pondexter. He stopped doing all the things that drive me absolutely up the wall (dribbling and shooting inside the three point line) and did what he's good at (shooting from the right side of the floor). Now keeping up the good work is going to be the hardest part. Up until his first three his body language worried me a good deal, but he powered through it all.
Vince Carter: 18 MINS | 2 PTS| 1-5 FGS | 3 REBS | +1
Not the best shooting performance from Vince. Instead of offense, Vince provided a steady defensive presence. He was everywhere affecting shots and fighting for rebounds. He also took a cheap shot from some dude that may have to answer to Z-Bo next game.
Beno Udrih: 15 MINS | 3 PTS | 1-6 FGS | 2 REBS | +1
Beno struggled with his shot against the Spurs, but it didn't matter tonight since Mike Conley adopted a scorched Earth policy.
Jarnell Stokes: 4 MINS | 0 PTS | 0-1 FGS | 1 REB | +4
Grade: Unable to be graded
Writing the above was super difficult for me. BUT RULES ARE RULES. I don't want to grade anyone that plays less than 10 minutes. HE WAS GREAT. HE WOULD GET AN A IF I DIDN'T HAVE RULES BUT I DO SO I'M SORRY.
