Grind Prophecies: Memphis Grizzlies stop in Cleveland to face Cavaliers

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sport

The lone free throw for the Memphis Grizzlies last night came from Courtney Lee with 8:33 left in the 2nd quarter. It was a technical free throw instigated by a defensive-3-seconds from Gustavo Ayon. Memphis would never step to the free throw line again and made history in Atlanta last night.

Atlanta committed a total of 10 personal fouls, but not a single one of them put a Grizzly to the free throw line. Even with Zach Randolph officially "in the mud," there was no contact made during any shooting attempt from the Grizzlies all evening (obviously debatable, but not with the officials apparently.)

It'd make things a lot easier for the Grizzlies if they could change that tonight, seeing as how getting to the free throw line is one of the more efficient ways to score in the NBA. The likely candidates to swing those numbers? I'd look to Courtney Lee and Marc Gasol. Lee is one of the few active Grizzlies that can actually drive to the rim and draw the contact as it seems Nick Calathes tries to avoid it at all costs and James Johnson just doesn't get the calls (he's averaging 1 FTA per game.)

Like Lee, a pre-injury Marc Gasol is a shooting foul magnet when he lets his aggression rule his body. Gasol is still struggling to find his footing on offense, but getting to free throw line could be just the medicine that Marc needs to find his scoring groove again.

It's pretty neat when the Grizzlies make history, but last night's free throw appearances are not the record performance we want to see Memphis trying to repeat.

Last edition's Grindmaster (at Hawks) was Zach Randolph.
