GBB Community Mock NBA Draft Pick #22: The Grizzlies Pick Again

It's time for the Memphis Grizzlies to once again select in the 2014 GBB Community Mock NBA Draft! The Grizzlies traded up to pick #14 earlier in the draft to solve a huge problem, selecting Doug McDermott to play the wing and score the basketball. Who will the MulliGM take at 22?

SuperGrizz wishes the MulliGM would be considered for the General Manager opening.

First things first, let's re-visit the trade that nabbed the Grizzlies their scoring wing.

  • Memphis receives pick #14 (used on Doug McDermott), J.J. Barea
  • Minnesota receives Courtney Lee, rights to Janis Timma

The MulliGM held on to pick #22, plus did not part with a member of the core four all while securing the rights to Dougie McBuckets, AKA Dougie Fresh, AKA Dougie McGrizzly.

This enables me to take the best available player possible on the MulliGM Big Board. This guy is in my top 12 players available and has fallen all of the way to #22, so I am doing my happy dance on the way to the podium to announce that with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 GBB Community Mock NBA Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies select-

22) Elfrid Payton, PG, UL Lafayette

Oh hey Nick Calathes, you're possibly entertaining deals overseas? After getting suspended and shooting the Grizzlies in the foot? Go get that money Nick, we will be fine over here with a young man who screams upside. He is a playmaker who gets to the rim well while being a terrific on-ball defender. He was voted the 2013-2014 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year and with his frame and 6'7" wing span he can defend either guard positions.

Which means he can play alongside Conley, allowing for Mike to take on more scoring responsibility. Does Payton have holes in his game? Absolutely; he is inconsistent from both the charity stripe and three point line. He needs to become more aggressive scoring the ball and less passive amongst teammates, and he makes mistakes in terms of turnovers, a concern for a college upper classman.

This is not your typical Junior, however. He, as the scouting video above explains, is 3 weeks older than Joel Embiid, 2 weeks older than Marcus Smart and 6 months older than Tyler Ennis. His body will continue to develop and mature. He has improved every season and will fit in well with this Grizzlies unit, especially on the defensive end of the court. He fills a need at the back-up point and can grow into the position, playing off of the pick-and-roll and playing to his strengths in his 12-14 minutes a night behind Conley.

Or heck, who knows? Since he is probably the best available on a lot of boards remaining, maybe someone will want to get his rights for themselves. All it will cost them is a Tayshaun Prince. If there are no takers, the Grizzlies just checked off a lot of their boxes through the draft; shooting, playmaking and athleticism.
