According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, the Memphis Grizzlies are in talks to add Jeff Bzdelik to the coaching staff.
Hearing Grizzlies boss Dave Joerger is in advanced talks to hire former Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik as an assistant for his staff in Memphis— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 23, 2014
Well, first things first: who is Jeff Bzdelik.
As Stein stated, Bzdelik's last coaching stint came with the Denver Nuggets from 2002 to 2004, eventually being fired 28 games into his third season, being replaced by Los Angeles Lakers legend and current WNBA head coach Michael Cooper.
Following his three year stint with the Nuggets, Bzdelik would head back to the collegiate game, coaching Air Force (05-07), the Colorado Buffaloes (07-10), and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons ('10-14). In that time span, Bzdelik only reached the postseason twice, both times with Air Force.
Famed NBA.com writer David Aldridge, who covered Bzdelik during the coach's stint with the Washington Bullets, had this to say about Jeff Bzdelik:
"He just knows the game," Aldridge said. "He works very well with players. He is an excellent teacher. I think he'd be a great head coach someday. I've been advocating this guy being on someone's bench for years."
The second thing everyone will ask is how do you pronounce Jeff's last name. According to a dated Marc Stein article, the pronunciation is (buzz-DIL-ik). Not difficult at all, right!
With the addition of Jeff Bzdelik, this brings the assistant coaching staff number to five, joining Elston Turner, Duane Ticknor, Bob Thornton, and Shawn Respert.
