Despite decent performances from Haddadi and Kamrani Iran could do very little to stop a dominant Spanish team from blowing them away in their opening match ofthe FIBA world cup.
Kamrani finished with 18 points on 7-11 shooting including 3-6 from behind the arc and Haddadi had 16 points on 7-17 and also added 15 rebounds. But as a team Iran would go on to shoot just 39% from the field and 61% from the free throw line.
But Pau and Marc Gasol ran the show for a Spanish team that won by a total of 30 points.
Marc finished with a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Pau exploded for 33 points on 12-20 from the field and 9-10 from he line. He also added 8 rebounds.
In the first quarter Pau had 8 points in the first 6 minutes. He set the ball rolling with a great put back from a missed 3 point attempt. He followed this up by being fouled on a layup attempt and making 2 shots from the line.
Iran showed they could be dangerous when Kamrani made two great 3 points with another Pau 2 pointer sandwiched inbetween.
Midway through the 1st quarter Iran have to call time out on the back of an 11-0 run by Spain. A great play from the time out sees Karmani hit a fantastic shot from behind the arc. Rudy Fernandez followed this up with a 3 of his own before Karmani hits another 3 in the dying seconds of the quarter. Of Iran's 18 points in the quarter, Karmani had 11.
Spain were up by 9 at the end of the 1st quarter. With Iran's 3 point shooting being the only reason the score was still close after a quarter in which they turned the ball over 5 times. They would go on to turn it over a further 14 times through the remainder of the game.
Rudy Fernandez opened the scoring in the 2nd with a great fade away from behind the backboard. Haddadi follows this at the other end by making a layup and drawing the foul. He went on to miss the free throw, leaving Iran shooting 27% from the line at this point. Rodriguez finishes with a great reverse layup which gives Spain a 13 point lead with 6:20 left in the half.
Navarro hits a 3 pointer with 3:02 left in the half. Before Karmani hits yet another 3 pointer. Iran then hit a 3 right on the buzzer, the officials rule 'no basket'.
At the half Pau has 19 points to lead Spain and Marc has 10. Kamrani has 16 on a good shooting performance.
A slow start for Spain in the 3rd sees them not making a field goal until 2:50 has gone off the clock when Fernandez hits a 3 pointer. Rubio then makes a great pass which finds Marc on the baseline who converts the jumper for 2 points. Pau then makes a hook shot from under the rim which puts Spain up 56-39.
Unfortunately I can't find a video of this next play but Rubio makes a fantastic steal and is beaten the length of the court by Marc. Rubio then finds Marc in the paint who finishes with an easy layup.
Rubio finds Fernandez just inside the arc. He passes up on the shot and feeds Marc down low who finishes with the two handed jam, and follows up by hanging on the rim and shaking like a man possessed. Much to the displeasure of the Iranians.
Spain would go on to extend the lead to 20 by the end of the quarter.
Both sides seemed to just be going through the motions in the 4th as the game was all but over. Pau would come out with 3:29 left to play, whilst Marc stayed out a litle longer.
Claver hits a 3 for Spain with 24 seconds left which put Spain up by 30. It was Spain's 7th made 3 pointer from 19 attempts.
Final score: Spain 90-60 Iran
