USA Clinch Top Spot In Group C With 35 Point Blow Out Win

USA have secured top spot in Group C by defeating The Dominican Republic 106-71.

USA overcame a slow first quarter, after which they led by just 3 points, to come away with a huge 35 point win which made certain of top spot in Group C.

Anthony Davis, who recorded 10 points on 5-10 shooting, after shooting 0-4 in the first quarter, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks, and Kenneth Faried who had 16 points on 8-11 shooting and 6 rebounds led the way for USA.

Anthony Davis won the tip, but the Dominican's nip in to steal the ball and almost score with a layup which is blocked by James Harden. The rebound is grabbed by Kyrie Irving who goes on to score the layup for the first 2 points of the game.

It was a slow first quarter for USA, shooting just 39.1% on field goal attempts including just 3-9 on three point attempts. The Dominican Republic shot 47.6% from the field in the first, but still found themselves trailing 22-25 at the end of the quarter.

Early in the second quarter Klay Thompson misses the open three, which is superbly pulled in by DeMarcus Cousin who is the fouled as he makes the shot and successfully makes the resulting free throw for a three point play.

Anthony Davis then gets his first points of the game with 7:03 on the clock when Harden assists him for the layup.

Jack Michael Martinez then hits a jumper to make the score 36-29 in favour of the USA, before Harden finds Faried with the alley oop who finishes with the dunk.

Anthony Davis makes a long jumper with 4 minutes left to play. He also successfully made his third shot of the quarter, meaning he went in at half time 3-7 from the field after going 0-4 in the first quarter.

At the end of the half USA had improved their field goal percentage to 48.9% which saw them leading 57-41 when the half time buzzer sounded.

At the half, Team USA had recorded 6 blocks, they would finish the game with a total of 8.

Jack Michael Martinez had a strong first half, recording 10 points on 4-4 shooting from the field. But he wouldn't add any points to his card in the second half.

Rudy Gay had a strong first half with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

Into the third quarter and Vargas opens the scoring with 2 points for The Dominican Republic, then on the other end Faried pulled down an offensive rebound and finished for USA's first points of the half.

James Harden assists Curry for an open layup which put USA up by 20 points with 5:04 left on the clock. A strong game from Curry would see him finish with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.

DeRozan put the USA up 79 points to 52 with a fantastic dunk on Martinez, then on the following play Rose steals the ball from Martinez who throws up the alley oop for DeRozan to finish with a layup. DeRozan finished the game with 11 points on 5-8 shooting.

At the end of the quarter USA held a 81-52 lead.

USA start the fourth quarter by outscoring the Dominicans 11 points to 0 before Santana gets to the line to get the Dominican Republic off the mark.

Mason Plumlee gets in on the action midway through the quarter with a nice two handed dunk. Then sandwiched between two Fortuna three pointers DeRozan steals the ball, gives it to Drummond who gives it to Plumlee, he then throws up the alley oop which Drummond slams down with authority.

Late in the quarter Thompson throws up an alley oop from mid court which is again slammed down by Drummond.

With 1.3 seconds left on the clock DeRozan hits a corner three which gives USA a 35 point win.

Special praise to DeMarcus Cousins who would finish the game with 13 points, going a perfect 5-5 from the field, 5 rebounds, and a very impressive 7 steals.

Team USA finished the game with a total of 18 steals and an impressive 28 assists.
