Report Card: Memphis Grizzlies vs. Utah Jazz

The complete report card for the Memphis Grizzlies victory in a basketball competition over the Utah Jazz.

Grizzlies Report Card

Grizzlies 100 - Jazz 90

Coach Dave Joerger:

Grade: B+

Hold on it's time for me to channel my inner Jimmy Fallon thank you notes style.

Thank you Coach Joerger for playing Nick Calathes big minutes in two point guard lineups. It was so much fun to watch. Thank you for letting me enjoy Kosta Koufos more in this game instead of pulling him out of the game if he shoots too much. Thank you for going back to things that work to get a win. Wins are my favorite.

Regards,

Jonah

Starters

Mike Conley: 31 MINS | 17 PTS | 6-11 FGS | 2 ASTS | +2

Grade: B

Mike Conley is not filling up the stat sheets lately, but he is still scoring the basketball at a good rate. He broke out the whole repertoire of moves against the Jazz to score a nice 17 points. Playing next to a gifted passer like Nick Calathes has given him many more opportunities from the three point line.

Courtney Lee: 29 MINS | 2 PTS | 1-4 FGS | 1 AST | +3

Grade: B-

I thought good Courtney Lee would have to show up if the Grizzlies wanted a bigger win and I think I was right. It was one of those nights where CLee just didn't have it and he knew it. So he limited his shot selection and moved the ball while playing good defense.

Jeff Green: 21 MINS | 13 PTS | 4-8 FGS | 4 ASTS | -4

Grade: C+

The success of the second unit made Jeff Green playing somewhat sensible. I think he probably could have absorbed all of Jon Leuer's minutes and the Grizzlies would have been fine. I hope he's not injured or anything, but I haven't seen anything to suggest he is. Maybe Coach Joerger thought he wasn't playing good defense (he'd be right)? Either way Green got acquainted with the hardwood in Utah.

Zach Randolph: 33 MINS | 18 PTS | 6-14 FGS | 11 REBS | +6

Grade: B+

Z-Bo hit a halfcourt shot. i saw it with my own eyes. It happened and it was glorious. Besides that he had a rough shooting performance. The athleticism of the Utah frontline bothered him inside, but the jumper was still falling and he got to the line for six free throws.

Marc Gasol: 33 MINS | 23 PTS | 9-18 FGS | 6 REBS | +5

Grade: A

The potential MVP showed up to play today! His offense and defense were key to the Grizzlies holding onto the lead while the Jazz were hitting crazy fadeaway three pointers with people in their faces. It was incredible. Marc wasn't bothered by the Jazz athleticism, like Z-Bo, but he is struggling with his jumper at the moment. IT WILL NOT GO IN. He still found other ways to score though. On defense Enes Kanter gave him some problems in the first half, but he was shut down in the second half.

Bench

Kosta Koufos: 19 MINS | 10 PTS | 5-10 FGS | 6 REBS| +9

Grade: A

KOSTA CAME FOR REVENGE UPON HIS FORMER TEAM. HE IS NOT SCARED OF ANY "STIFLE TOWER" OR DERRICK FAVORS. HE WILL BRING THE PAIN UPON ANYONE THAT ENTERS HIS PAINT.

Nick Calathes: 21 MINS | 6 PTS| 3-4 FGS | 7 ASTS | +11

Grade: A

NICKY C AKA THE WIZARD AKA SLICK NICK IS GETTING PLAYING TIME AND I AM SOOOO HAPPY. The Wizard has taken over a strange role of the Grizzlies bench with Vince Carter out. He is running the point with Beno Udrih or Mike Conley at the two and it's working and I love it and if you don't like Nick Calathes we can't be friends. The defense of the second unit is so much better when Calathes is in and the offense gets more transition opportunities. Win/Win.

Tony Allen: 24 MINS | 2 PTS | 0-3 FGS | 3 REBS | +10

Grade: B

This is what I like to call a "Tony Allen Special" (yea I just made it up so what?). He doesn't make a shot, but is so good on defense that it cancels out his not so great offensive performance. As per the usual he was all over the place and wreaked havoc with Nick Calathes. It was fun to watch. Seems like TA has accepted the bench role and is playing his butt off.

P.S. driving at Rudy Gobert is a really, really bad idea. Don't do it.

Beno Udrih: 18 MIN | 7 PTS | 3-5 FGS | 2 ASTS | +8

Grade: B

Beno was aggressive going to the basket and hit a three! I think his defense on the perimeter was ok, but Trey Burke was hitting some wild shots so people are going to talk bad about him.

Jon Leuer: 11 MINS | 2 PTS | 1-3 FGS| 2 REBS| +0

Grade: F

Being scared to shoot is not the best attribute for a basketball player. Add the fact that Jonny can't stay on the floor without fouling and you have a problem. Games like this are why JaMychal Green is being brought in for a 10 day contract.
