Report Card: Memphis Grizzlies at New Orleans Pelicans

The complete report card from the Grizzlies' 6 point loss in New Orleans

Memphis Grizzlies Report Card

Grizzlies 89 - Pelicans 95

Head Coach Dave Joerger

Grade: C-

In the first half it looked like Coach Joerger had done a great job of motivating his team before the game; the Grizzlies started well and held an 18-point lead in the second quarter, though that lead was cut to 12 by the half. I don't know what was said during halftime, but the team came out looking like they weren't interested in playing basketball. Perhaps Coach reminded them that the Pelicans were hot on the heels of OKC for the 8th seed. Jeff Green struggled to guard Tyreke Evans all night, Coach could see Jeff struggling, so he did what any Coach would do. He took him off Evans......only to have him guard Anthony Davis instead. Joerger should also have run more plays for Gasol and Randolph; they took a combined 17 shots in the came, whilst Jeff Green alone took 18.

Mike Conley: 30 MINS | 17 PTS | 5-9 FG | 3 ASTS | 4REBS | -14

Grade: C+

Mike started the game like he wasn't injured after all. He had his shot going and was doing a nice job facilitating for his teammates. In the second half, Mike looked like he did need a rest and I think it might work out better in the long run if he gets a few nights off to get himself right. Norris Cole managed to get the better of him during the second half collapse. If Conley was anywhere near 100%, there's no chance Cole gets the upper hand in the matchup. 6 of Mike's field goal attempts came from behind the 3 point line, and he did hit 3 of them, but we need him driving at the basket, hitting that right handed floater. Trying threes instead of playing his usual game proves that he's injured in my eyes.

Courtney Lee: 24 MINS | 5 PTS | 2-9 FG | 1 REB | -12

Grade: D

Courtney couldn't get anything going offensively throughout the game - his shot just wouldn't fall. If CLee doesn't get his shot going early, his head drops and his confidence falls rapidly. Usually if Lee is struggling on offense the Grizzlies can count on him to put great effort into his defense. Last night he struggled on that side as well, as Eric Gordon hit 4-6 field goal attempts which included 3-5 from behind the arc. The loss isn't on any one player but Courtney definitely played his part.

Jeff Green: 35 MINS | 20 PTS | 8-18 FG | 3 ASTS | 4 REBS | -1

Grade: C-

Jeff Green shouldn't be taking 18 shots in any game for Memphis. Maybe Jeff thought he was hot after making his first 3 shots of the game, maybe he thought he was back in Boston and that he didn't have 3 other scorers on the floor with him. Who knows? Coach Joerger needs to make sure this doesn't happen again, I'm sure it will though. On the defensive end he couldn't do anything to stop Tyreke Evans, so he then had to guard Anthony Davis for a few possessions, which didn't end well either. I'm gonna say that his offensive struggles in the second half were down to losing confidence after getting torched on the defensive end.

Zach Randolph: 29 MINS | 7 PTS | 3-10 FG | 3 ASTS | 2 REBS | 3 STLS | -11

Grade: C

Zach was fantastic in a first quarter in which he had 6 points, 2 assists, and 3 steals. He didn't do much more after that quarter though, as he added just 1 more point to that first quarter tally and finished with a less than impressive 2 rebounds in 29 minutes. He also struggled at the charity stripe, hitting just 1-4 free throws. He wasn't the only one though; the Grizzlies missed 10-29 free throws in the game. Anthony Davis owned ZBo last night as he blocked him numerous times and got the better of him in the rebound battle. Nothing against Zach, but he just came up against a fantastic young talent last night. I'm sure Zach will bounce back from this below par performance when the Grizzlies take on the Bulls on Monday.

Marc Gasol: 34 MINS | 8 PTS | 2-7 FG | 6 ASTS | 7 REBS | 3 STLS | 5 BLKS | -14

Grade: B

Marc had a fantastic all around game last night - just look at that stat line. Give Gasol 4 or 5 of Jeff Green's field goal attempts and I think the Grizzlies win this game. Gasol was on course for a triple double at halftime as he had 5 points, 5 assists, and 6 rebounds. It took Marc almost the entire first half to attempt his first shot of the game (1.9 seconds left in the half); this should have been the catalyst for Marc to take over the game in the second half, but it wasn't.  He hit just 1-6 shots in the final two quarters.

Bench

Tony Allen: 32 MINS | 7 PTS | 3-5 FG | 1 AST | 8 REBS | 6 STLS | +1

Grade: B+

Tony is trying his hardest get his starting spot back. If he keeps performing as he has the last 2 games, nobody could argue if he did get that spot back. He's finishing well at the basket after having a few struggles with layups this season, long may that continue. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Tony Allen thrives in these scrappy games. Last night was no different.  For me he was the best player on the court for Memphis.

Beno Udrih: 15 MINS | 11 PTS | 4-6 FG | 3 ASTS | 4 REBS | +1

Grade: B

Pre-All-Star break Beno showed up to play last night. It was a joy to watch as he found his mid-range game once again. He also did a good job driving to the basket and getting himself to the free throw line. He linked up well with Calathes throughout the game, which is a good sign for the Grizzlies heading towards the final stretch of the season.

Nick Calathes: 19 MINS | 9 PTS | 3-3 FG | 7 ASTS | 3 REBS | +5

Grade: B

Nick's streak of finishing games with multiple steals came to an end. He did great things on the court though, hitting all of his field goal attempts (including a corner three) and dishing out 7 assists for his teammates. If the Grizzlies decide to shut Conley down for a few games, I have no doubt that Nick can come into the starting lineup and contribute just as much as when he comes off the bench.

Kosta Koufos: 13 MINS | 2 PTS | 1-4 FG | 5 REBS | +8

Grade: C

Kosta could't get his shot going, which is becoming a regular thing for him since the All-Star break. He wasn't the only big man who struggled with his shot though. Once again he grabbed a good number of rebounds in his short minutes but didn't do anything else of note in the game.

Vince Carter: 5 MINS | 3 PTS | 1-3 FG | 1 REB | +7

Grade: Ineligible

VC hit his first three pointer since his return from injury. The Grizzlies fans in New Orleans erupted. Hopefully he can find his range as we head towards the playoffs.
