Final Score: Geared Up Grizzlies Muzzle Westbrook, Thunder 100-92

It was the best basketball in FedEx Forum in recent memory, and hopefully an auspicious outcome against a playoff caliber opponent. The Grizzlies are now all square with Houston in the 2 spot.

Tony Allen was all tweeded up on the sideline tonight and will likely miss tomorrow's game too with a strained hamstring.

Game Story

This one opened up like a high revving V8. The Grizz shot 50% in the first quarter, thanks to some old fashioned bully buckets from Zach Randolph and a fully turnt Marc Gasol. The crowd, including Peyton Manning, was loud.

It looked like Russell Westbrook was going to carry the Thunder as usual, but it was the OKC bench that put the brakes on and build a steady 8 point lead in the second quarter. The Grizzlies missed their first 9 three-pointers and it took Mike Conley getting to the line for 4 FTs to keep the points flowing for Memphis. Finally, a pair of blocks by Marc Gasol and threes by Jeff Green and Courtney Lee pulled the Grizzlies back even at 41-41 with 5:00 left in the half. From there, Green scored 9 more en route to 16 first half points and the Grizz took a 55-49 lead into the locker room.

In a comparatively sleepy third quarter, OKC overcame 6 turnovers to tie the game on an Enes Canter jumper with 5:48 to go, but the Grizzlies ran off 8 straight in response and took a 77-69 edge into the fourth. Holding Westbrook to a surprisingly sub-nuclear 18 points on 5-20 shooting (credit Jeff Green's solid defense), the Grizz were able to hold an arm's-length 10 point lead through most of the quarter.

Things got nervy when a silly foul by Zach led to a 3-point posession for Canter, and a runner by Steven Adams made it a four-point game, but Marc Gasol iced the game with a baby hook at the 1:15 mark to force an OKC timeout. The Thunder played the foul game but Marc got the final board of the game to run out the clock.

Men of the match:

Marc Gasol: 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 0 ripped jerseys.

Jeff Green: 22 points, 5 rebounds, and a sinus-clearing knee to Russell Westbrook's face.

Liner Notes

• Memphis was 4-21 from three. Z-bo was 1-2.

• Rather than call out the ESPN broadcast schedulers, this time Dave Joerger used his sideline interview to summarize the Grizzlies' offense: "Well, Marc Gasol is a stud." Accurate, Dave.

Nick Calathes went 5 for 5 and fouled out in 13 minutes.

• Play us out, Matt.
