It was a 7:30 tip on a Wednesday night. Tony Allen didn't even play due to an eye injury, and Memphis had not beaten the Spurs in what had seemed like forever. Why would this game be any different? Well, about three hours later, Grizzlies fans were celebrating that the streak had finally been broken. The Grizzlies had won. But man, it wasn't easy.
The Smash Brothers came up big in this one as Zach Randolph had 21 points and 21 rebounds, while Marc Gasol had 26 points and 9 rebounds. Mike Conley and Courtney Lee also made some extremely critical three's.
At one point, the Grizzlies were leading by 23 in the game, but the Spurs gained a 92-89 lead with 2 seconds to go in regulation.
Then, the first of many crazy plays happened. Gasol made an improbable banked-in three pointer, and the game was headed into overtime.
After a series of back-and-forth scoring between the two teams, the score was tied up at 102. This thing was headed into double overtime.
And then triple overtime was upon us as the score was 111-111 thanks to a fadeaway Tim Duncan jumper over Marc Gasol as the time clock rang out shrilly.
Zach Randolph completely took over this third overtime and scored 6 points in five minutes to secure the Grizzlies' victory.
There were untimely turnovers, incredible three's, and clutch plays. I don't clearly recall the first half of this game, or the third quarter, for that matter. But the end of that fourth quarter and the three overtimes are embedded into my memory forever. And this win came right after snapping the Warriors' 16 game winning streak on Tuesday night. This was one of the most insane Grizzlies games I've ever watched, and it'll be hard for this one to be eclipsed by another.
