Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol keeps racking up the awards even with the Grizzlies season now over. Brothers Pau and Marc Gasol have been awarded The Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, an award for excellence in Spain and abroad.
From the Princess Asturias Foundation:
Pau and Marc Gasol boast a brilliant record of achievements, both with the Spanish basketball squad –2006 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports– and with the respective clubs in which they have played, in Spain as well as in the US NBA, where they are currently playing. World champions and two-time European champions and Olympic runners-up, Pau and Marc Gasol became living legends in the world’s leading basketball league. Last February, they became the first pair of brothers to be chosen to play in the starting line-up –chosen by fans from around the world by digital vote– in the NBA All-Star Game played in New York, being the stars of the opening tipoff of this game, which was seen all around the world. Considered role models of sporting values and ambassadors of Marca España (Brand Spain), the Gasol Brothers set up the Gasol Foundation in 2013 with the aim of promoting physical activity and healthful eating habits among schoolchildren in Los Angeles (USA) and Badalona (Spain). They also collaborate with UNICEF.
This is the second time the Gasols have one this award. They were awarded this prize in 2006 as members of the Spanish National Basketball Team.
The Princess Asturias Foundation awards the "scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions." The winners receive a statue that will be presented to them by the King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain and a 50,000 euro prize. The Princess of Asturias is a title given to daughters of the King and Queen who are next in line for the throne.
Past award winners for sports include Jose Maria Olazabal, Rafael Nadal, and the Spanish Nation Football Squad in 2010.
Having a Grizzly start the All-Star game was a big deal. Having two brothers start against each other was a big deal. Having both Gasols make the ALL-NBA team was a big deal. And now the Gasol brothers have been honored for their athletic dominance and their charitable endeavors with a high honor from the Spanish royal family.
