From GM Jonah Jordan:
The Timberwolves are have hit the jackpot the last two seasons. Trading for Andrew Wiggins and now the first round pick. To keep up the momentum they have to take the player with the most potential in the draft.
Karl Towns is already a dynamic offensive player. He has range so he can space the floor as a four or a five. He wasn't able to show off his shooting ability much at Kentucky as John Calipari doesn't like his big men shooting. The mechanics are there it's just about getting the reps. His jump shot opens up the high post for him to wreak havoc with his nice passing ability.
Besides his ability to space the floor, Towns has nice handles and a can get into the post. He has the handles to take a defender off the dribble and score if the option is there. He has post moves, but they need work. This is where Jahlil Okafor has the upper hand on Towns. Towns doesn't have the advanced footwork in the post that Okafor has, but at least he has the tools (strength, nice touch and a high basketball IQ).
The defensive end is where Towns separates himself from the pack. Towns has the athleticism and long arms to make a difference on defense. He has a lot of work to do on that end so he can be one, though. There needs to be work on his discipline and how he defends pick and rolls, but he has so much potential on that end of the floor.
Towns fits the next step of the rebuilding process the Timberwolves are going through. They have the awesome point guard and the completely-amazing-makes-me-jealous small forward so now they just need the center with crazy amounts of potential.
There we have it. The first domino to fall for the 2015 Draft.
Up next at #2 we have the Los Angeles Lakers represented by chipwilliamsjr. You are on the clock!
