Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports
A Call to Arms to Grit & Grind & Write Together!

Hello everyone, Grizzly Bear Blues is currently looking for new talent to add to its tremendous staff. I am looking for writers/bloggers/editors/typists/poets/artists/mimes to help enrich the great material we're publishing on the site everyday. We offer some of everything here at GBB, and we welcome voices of all shapes and sizes. Your chance for greatness is at hand!

What's the Deal

GBB continues to grow and make an impact in the Memphis Grizzlies blogging world. There's a lot of great Grizzlies blogs out there these days, and GBB takes pride in being at the forefront of this medium. Becoming a part of the exclusive staff of GBB gives you one of the more prominent voices in the Memphis Grizzlies community, a chance to be heard and adored by the masses!

The typical Grizzlies fan is a hungry animal, often feeding on Grizzlies-related material as many as 10-15 times a day. I need people who are passionate about feeding these beasts we call Grizzlies fans. The good thing about this fan base, however, is that it's incredible omnivorous. There's room for a lot of different styles here at GBB.

Why you should join us

Some of our staff have used their time with GBB as a springboard into bigger (and paid) writing gigs with other publications. While that's definitely not the goal of everyone here, it's a beautiful and very real perk for your efforts on the site. SB Nation is now a highly recognizable brand in the sports world. When people see your named attached to something published on our site, it means something and makes an impression.

We're apart of a network that is constantly working to provide your audience the best experience on our site and commits a lot of resources towards helping your work reach the most people it possibly can. Writing for GBB will put your work in front of more NBA and Grizzlies fans than any other blog out there.

Minimum Qualifications

1. You are a huge fan of basketball and the Memphis Grizzlies.

2. You spend way too much time thinking and reading about the Grizzlies. If you'd be embarrassed by how often GBB shows up in your browser history at work, we need YOU.

3. You can take the thoughts inside your head and transcribe them into competent arrangements of English words that effectively communicate your idea, i.e., you need to be able to write. Experience is not necessarily required but it'll definitely expedite your work getting published.

4. You have strong opinions on the Grizzlies that have not been yet been brought to the foreground.

5. You have strong opinions on Grizzlies issues that have already been brought to the foreground but need some additional perspective.

5. You take genuine pride in your writing, your discussions and how you gather facts and data to back them up.

6. You aren't offended by someone respectfully disagreeing with you.

Preferred qualifications

1. You are an active member of the Grizzly Bear Blues community or are very interested in figuring out how the site operates and communicates.

2. You are active on Twitter and/or Facebook, spending time looking for fresh news and analysis of the Grizzlies.

3. You click on your GBB bookmark at the first notice of any Grizzlies-related news.

4. You enjoy discussing Griz fodder on our website and social networks and want to enrich the discussion in our comments.

5. You can commit your time and passion throughout the full NBA season.

-The Writers We Need-

News Reporting

The people involved in this aspect of the site need to be quick-thinking, computer savvy folk who have a passion for sharing news with other fans.

This is a big part of what we do here. GBB is frequently one of the first sites to post reactions and news stories about the Memphis Grizzlies. The idea is to provide a platform for breaking news or rumor discussions as they pop up throughout the day. A writer who takes control of this journalistic weapon will often be in charge of setting the tone for discussions on the site, a tone that speaks volumes in Grizz Nation.

A writer who wants to be involved with this aspect of the site will need a flexible schedule, particularly during the workday when news typically breaks. Our goal at GBB is to have a post ready to be published within an hour or so of the story breaking. These types of post aren't required to be 2,500 word diatribes. Sometimes a couple hundred words (2-3 paragraphs) can be very effective in starting the discussion, with more detailed analysis coming later in the day or even the day after.

Game Day Coverage

The people involved in this aspect of the site need to be able to work on deadlines and time constraints. If you're passionate about the game day experience and very familiar with the NBA as a whole, this is up your alley.

Our game coverage is the staple of GBB and SB Nation -- one of the reasons people come to us and trust our coverage. There's, at minimum, 90 games to cover every season (don't forget those 8 preseason games!) and usually a postseason swath that's even more intensely covered. For every game we will have a preview, a live GameThread and post-game coverage that includes a quick recap (posted within an hour of game's end) and a full recap (in-depth analysis to be posted by the next morning). Someone interested in this type of writing could be involved in all of those aspects or be solely committed to helping with one of them.

The name of the game here is efficiency and punctuality. A quick recap that's ready at 2:00AM does little good for anyone, as does a preview that's posted an hour before tip-off. The people we need helping with this endeavor should be able to write concisely and would operate effectively on a schedule. Much like the News Reporting, Game Day Coverage usually provides the jump start for conversations and sets the tone after a win or loss.

Short Form (Quick Grits & Fine Grinds)

The people involved with this aspect of GBB will need to be witty, tech-savvy and self motivated. The Short Form posts are intended to usually be humorous or light-hearted, but most importantly they're intended to be quickly and easily consumed by our readers. That also means they're intended to be quickly and easily composed. Some of these posts I do literally take a couple of minutes to put together.

There's a WHOLE lot more involved in an NBA blog besides writing and talking about basketball. In today's media, there are interesting tidbits constantly filtering through the Grizz-o-sphere that deserve to be shared with all Grizzlies and NBA fans. Players, teams and affiliates are posting sharable content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, etc etc everyday and there's really nothing too small or insignificant to include at GBB.

Did one of the Grizzlies post a photo from a family reunion? Is Tony Allen singing a goofy song to his cute little kid? Is Marc Gasol in a new commercial? Did Zach Randolph tweet something funny to Robert Pera? This is material I really want accessible on GBB so that all kinds of fans feel welcome in our community.

Features and Analysis

Here's where the experienced writers will want to thrive and grow. Writing features for GBB in 2015-16 will require a certain standard of writing that includes technique, experience, punctuality, consistency and ingenuity.

Odds are that a lot of you have ended up at GBBers because of a big feature piece you saw floating around the internet. This is where we show off our knowledge, expertise, creativity and unique perspective of the Grizzlies and the NBA (and sometimes just life in general.)

Someone who wants to get involved with being featured on GBB will need to be patient and diligent as you work your way towards the privilege of this exposure. We're very blessed here to have a lot of great writers who have been publishing fantastic work on the site for years now, and that hard work will allow my senior writers to have first dibs on big stories and concepts. But we won't always be able to spearhead the big features every week. It's a very long NBA season, and there will always come a time where someone new has an opportunity to shine. Or maybe you've got a brand new idea for a weekly post that can stand alone without stepping on the toes of other writers. That's definitely something we can discuss.

If you are wanting to pursue a career in writing and are looking to hone your craft over the long haul, I would love to talk to you about writing features.

Social Media Facilitators

The people involved in this area of the site will need to be social butterflies with great people skills who love interacting with others and talking about the Grizzlies on social platforms. The GBB Twitter account now has almost 5,000 followers and the GBB Facebook nearly 4,000 likes. That's a powerful tool for getting our material out to the people who want to read it, and it could be a great way to make your mark on Grizz Nation.

Content Editing and Site Maintenance

There are a LOT of words that get published on GBB every week, and I'm always looking for educated folk who want to help with editing and polishing up the articles we post. But there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than just proofreading and spellchecking, and there's a lot more that COULD be going on than what we're already doing. If you are a perfectionist who likes to keep things clean and organized, there could definitely be room for your skills at GBB.

Something I'm Totally Forgetting or Overlooking

Maybe you a new idea we haven't even thought about incorporating into the site. We are a fluid group here at GBB, and good ideas are always welcomed and entertained. If you think you have something to contribute, I WANT YOU TO CONTACT ME ABOUT IT!

The Writers We Want

We're hoping to assemble a steady and reliable group of writers who can contribute something unique to Grizzly Bear Blues. I obviously need people who take this opportunity seriously, but, as you can confirm with my staff, we're not going to invade and take over your life here. Your passion for the site, the Grizzlies or the City of Memphis is at least partially why you're still reading this post, and I find that that emotional investment is usually plenty of fuel for providing great material on GBB.

The casual internet surfer can find Grizzlies news at a dozen different sites on the internet, but Grizzly Bear Blues is the place we want them coming to first, and they'll do so because we offer a unique voice and a genuine essence of the Griz fan base.

Do You Feel The Itch?

If you're still reading then you have passed the first step: you're thinking about how you can contribute to the site! Your next action should be to contact me personally so we can discuss your aspirations and figure out a role for you on the GBB staff. Have some sample work ready for me to review or, even better, go write up a FanPost on the site as your audition!

Be honest with me about your skill and available time you can commit. Don't worry yourself with coming in and knocking everyone's socks off with a NY-Times-ready column. The profound and bone-shaking article ideas will eventually come to you as we work through the season. Right now, we just need passionate and committed people who want to become a part of and enrich our growing community.

Are You Up For It?

If you feel like you have something to offer Grizzly Bear Blues go ahead and email me over at rainydaymanual@gmail.com. Although GBB gigs are voluntary and unpaid, (although if we grow the site like I feel we will then that can change!) what we can offer you is wide exposure to thousands of people around the world. Your name -- in print -- with throngs of fans hanging on your every word. While one of my biggest goals is to bolster our reputation in Memphis, TN, we already have thousands from around the globe coming to our site because of the quality material we provide in covering the Grizzlies.
