Memphis Grizzlies Media Day: Dave Joerger sees Russ Smith as a bench spark

Dave Joerger looks to be getting more and more comfortable as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies every season. In fact, at this point it's hard for me to think that he's only been at the helm for two seasons. We're very fortunate to have someone coaching the team who has been so closely involved with the evolution of the franchise over the years. I want to say everyone feels comfortable, but no one is relaxed enough for that to be true. They are all still hungry.

"We've always been a team that works."

"When you look on the bench and you need a spark, I think Russ smith is a guy that can do that. Jordan Adams and Russ Smith have got to stay ready."

"We brought in different guys for different reasons. But our roster is pretty much set."

"I'm so excited we only have seven preseason games. It gives us an extra two days of not traveling"

"ZBO is difficult to take out, especially once he gets cooking on the right block. We tried to manage his minutes some last season."

"This is our roster. I know people are spreading it out more but this is who we are."

Thoughts: RUSS SMITH ALERT!! RUSS SMITH ALERT!! DAVE JOERGER IS A RUSS SMITH FAN!! That's the exciting part. The rest sounds like the murmuring of a focused man who's ready for the regular season to start. Sounds like we'll be living and dying by our paint presence until... well, until we just completely die, I suppose. That's all right. Robert Pera is going to make sure these guys stay fit and healthy through their 60's.
