Report card: Memphis Grizzlies vs. Houston Rockets

Grading the Memphis Grizzlies performance against the Houston Rockets.

Grizzlies Report Card

Grizzlies 91 - Rockets 107

Coach Dave Joerger:

Grade: C

Memphis played with a shortened rotation due to injury so Joerger benched a wing and played Vince Carter 20 minutes. Then Marc Gasol played 40 minutes, which was the fourth time in six games that Gasol has played 35+ minutes.

Starters

Mario Chalmers: 41 MINS | 10 PTS | 3-8 FGS | 9 ASTS | -10

Grade: C+

Chalmers almost had a double-double, but he struggled to hit shots and turned the ball over three times. He is having to play too many minutes since Conley is down, Russ Smith was waived and Joerger isn't playing Elliot Williams any meaningful minutes. He did the best he could against the relentless Patrick Beverly while surrounded by few playmakers.

Courtney Lee: 37 MINS | 16 PTS | 6-12 FGS | 3 REBS | +1

Grade: B

Courtney Lee stepped up his production in the absence of Mike Conley. He is starting to heat up from three as he shot 3-5 against the Rockets and looked really good after missing two games with a hip injury.

Tony Allen: 32 MINS | 17 PTS | 6-12 FGS | 7 REBS | -9

Grade: B+

Taking time off time due to a knee injury was the best thing that has happened to Allen since maybe ever. It apparently has made him an offensive savant. HE HIT TWO THREES! IT'S LIKE THE END TIMES. I have no idea how much longer it's going to last, but I do know the regression is not going to be fun. We just need to enjoy opposite-world-Tony-Allen while he's here.

Jeff Green: 15 MINS | 3 PTS | 0-2 FGS | 2 ASSTS | -10

Grade: D

The blame for the Grizzlies struggles falls on Jeff Green, fair or unfair is a big argument, and having him on the bench in the second half didn't do much to change the outcome of the game. Green had an absolutely brutal first half and the Grizzlies ran out of steam without him, but with the way he was playing on both ends he wasn't going to swing the game in the Grizzlies favor.

Marc Gasol: 40 MINS | 20 PTS | 8-15 FGS | 5 REBS | -11

Grade: B

Gasol scored 11 points in the first quarter then was barely heard from for the remainder of the game. He failed to take over as the game was slipping a away. He did have to play 40 minutes, but he stopped shooting after the first quarter. His aggressiveness disappeared completely.

Dwight Howard is notorious for struggling against Gasol, but he was very good last night against Marc. He scored 17 points, pulled in 14 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. The Grizzlies need Gasol to be the best big man on the floor and he wasn't against the Rockets.

Bench

Zach Randolph: 33 MINS | 10 PTS | 5-10 FGS | 9 REBS | -9

Grade: B

SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR ZACH RANDOLPH! Not really. If Will Barton doesn't win that I'll actually cry real tears. If Randolph keeps playing at this level that could become a reality. He's been tearing it up in January and that didn't change against the Rockets. He kept up the production after starting the third quarter, but lost momentum in the fourth quarter much like the rest of the Grizzlies.

Vince Carter: 20 MINS | 10 PTS| 3-7 FGS | 3 REBS | -13

Grade: B-

Vince did things that made him look alive! It was awesome to watch. He threw down an alley-oop from Courtney Lee that made everyone jump out of their seats. He is showing flashes of his old self over and over again, but his old age still shows at times. He misses rotations on defense and his shot selection is still not great, but he still makes the occasional play, which the Grizzlies need right now.

JaMychal Green: 14 MINS | 3 PTS | 1-2 FGS | 1 REB | -9

Grade: C

Green gave energy and hit a three, but was mostly ineffective in his 14 minutes.

Elliot Williams: 5 MINS | 0 PTS | 0-1 FGS| 1 ASST | -7

Grade: Not eligible

James Ennis: 2 MINS | 2 PTS | 1-2 FGS | 0 ASTS | -3

Grade: Not eligible

DNPs

Mike Conley: Sore left achilles injury

Matt Barnes: Bruised right thumb

Jordan Adams: Knee surgery

Brandan Wright: Knee surgery
