Coming into tonight, the Grizz looked to bounce back from a tough road loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. During the entire first half, both the Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies were able to get whatever they wanted offensively, but both teams struggled on the defensive end. At the end of the first quarter, Orlando led 33-31. Marc Gasol came out strong in the first quarter with 9 points and had 17 on the night. In the second quarter, Memphis was down by as many as 8 but cut the deficit to 1 (65-64) by halftime. At the half, Jeff Green already had 19 points, including 2-3 from three, in only 14 minutes of play. For the Magic, Tobias Harris had 11 at halftime. Tony Allen made his return for the Grizzlies and had 9 points and 12 rebounds on the night. The Grizzlies struggled with their defensive identity in the first half, but they did a good job of protecting the ball as they had only 3 turnovers.
In the third quarter, the Grizzlies quickly gained a 67-65 lead in the first couple minutes of play. However, things would stay neck-and-neck throughout the period. Off the bench, Ryan Hollins has been getting into a rhythm on the offensive end and has been utilizing the lob with both Mario Chalmers and Mike Conley, and this was on display in the third:
Toward the end of the quarter the Grizzlies started to lock down on defense. But at the end of the third, the Magic led 81-80 thanks to a buzzer beater three by Evan Fournier. The Magic would continue on a roll after that and take a five point lead at the beginning of the fourth.Things would continue to stay tight down the stretch. Orlando's 19 turnovers hurt them badly in the end, and Tony Allen cashed in on 3 steals. The Grizz pulled out to a five point lead with less than five minutes to go, but the Magic again cut the deficit to 1 with less than two minutes left. Elfrid Payton put the Magic up by 2 with less than 30 seconds to go. The Grizzlies, down two, gave Marc Gasol the ball but he lost it in the paint and the Magic ran out in transition for a dunk to put them up four. Quickly, Jeff Green responded with a baseline slam with 14 seconds left. On the next Magic possession, the Grizz stole the ball and Jeff Green buried the difficult jumper:
And the game was headed to overtime!
Both teams struggled to score in overtime, and the Grizz were up by 1 with less than two minutes to go. Two made free throws by Z-Bo put Memphis up by 3 with less than 40 seconds to go. On the night, Randolph had 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Magic thought they had an easy lay up on the next possession, but former DPOY Marc Gasol blocked the shot attempt. A split pair of free throws by Courtney Lee put the Grizz up by 2 possessions, and Fournier missed a contested three. After a few free throws, the win was sealed for Memphis.
On the night, Jeff Green ended up having 30 points and was definitely the hero of the game.
Now, Memphis faces the Milwaukee Bucks Thursday night and look to grab another win at home.
