Grizzlies waive Vince Hunter and Chris Crawford

Memphis whittles down its training camp roster.

The Grizzlies waived Vince Hunter and Chris Crawford, whittling their roster down to 18 players. We can expect similar announcements in the coming days, as the Grizzlies finalize their roster and ready for Wednesday’s regular season opener against Minnesota.

Today’s announcement shouldn’t surprise anyone. After waiving Tony Wroten, the Grizzlies signed Vince Hunter to supplement their banged-up training camp roster. Even with Jarrell Martin sidelined and possibly out for the season opener, the Grizzlies don’t have much to offer Hunter with Deyonta Davis finally logging minutes.

Chris Crawford’s departure was also expected. He was below Andrew Harrison and Wade Baldwin in the pecking order, and looked out of sync with the speed of the game during the few minutes he played.

While I love Clutch Crawford from his days as a Tiger, and think he can elevate his game and have a successful basketball career, there just isn’t any space for him on the final roster.

These cuts were no-brainers, but the Grizzlies will have some difficult decisions to make in the coming days. Will DJ Stephens make the team? Could Troy Williams play a role? Stay tuned.

UPDATE: The Grizzlies have added two players to the roster in the wake of Hunter and Crawford being waived.

As Michael Wallace of Grind City Media states, this likely has more to do with filling out the Iowa Energy roster than anything else. But time will tell as more roster moves are sure to be coming out in the coming days.
