Memphis Grizzlies Sign Vince Hunter

The former Grizzlies Summer Leaguer figures to have a cup of coffee in Memphis.

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced the signing of Vince Hunter, a 6’8” forward out of UTEP. Hunter was on the Grizzlies Summer League team and averaged 11.8 points and 7 rebounds per game. He was just waived by the Chicago Bulls, opening up the possibility of Memphis bringing him back.

It is likely that this is not a permanent stay in the Bluff City for Hunter, however. After the waiving of Tony Wroten on Friday, the Grizzlies had an open spot on their preseason roster. Considering that both Deyonta Davis and Jarell Martin are banged up/unlikely to play much this week and Memphis plays three games this week starting Tuesday against Philadelphia, this is probably more about making sure Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, Brandan Wright, and JaMychal Green don’t get run in to the ground in preseason games than Hunter being in the mix for a roster spot.

And that is OK for Hunter. It is three to four games for him to showcase his game for teams that may actually have roster room for him, and it gives him incentive to want as many minutes as possible. It’s a win-win for all involved.
