There's something to be said for tanking.
After all, the NBA has a system in which it is essentially rewarded. So it is hard to blame a team like the Philadelphia 76ers for trying to get as much talent as possible by losing as many games as possible by fielding terrible teams.
There is a problem with that, however. Your team gets used to losing and does not know how to win.
You disenfranchise fans. You exhaust coaching staffs. All in the name of a "process" that is the opposite of the basis of athletics- competition.
Compare that with the Memphis Grizzlies, whose roster has gotten a lot younger the past year. No, there are no Ben Simmons or Joel Embiids in the Bluff City, but there is a solid mix of rookie/2nd year players and veterans who are playing in competitive games and gaining valuable experience due to the injuries the Grizzlies have gone through so far this season. Will Memphis win a title with this roster? Probably not- not everyone can hit home runs with cheap contracts for formerly injury-prone MVPs or be the home town of all-time greats.
But they compete. And they win a lot more than they lose the past six seasons. I'll take that over "the process" any day.
