Chris Wallace said earlier this week that they would begin their search for a new head coach for this Memphis Grizzlies this week, and it appears that they have already begun the process.
According to Ken Berger from CBS Sports
Hornets asst. Patrick Ewing interviewed yesterday for the Memphis head coaching job, league sources say. Ewing also interviewed w/ Kings.— Ken Berger (@KBergCBS) May 13, 2016
Patrick Ewing has no experience as a head coach in the NBA, but has NBA coaching experience. After retiring from the NBA in 2002, he worked as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets from 2003-2006 working for Jeff Van Gundy.
Ewing then worked for the other Van Gundy, Stan, in Orlando as an assistant coach from 2007-2012. In 2009, he was on the staff that went to the NBA Finals, where he personally guaranteed they would win game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics. That team would lose to the Los Angeles Lakers. He has received a lot of credit for getting the most out of Dwight Howard during this stretch.
When SVG was fired as the Magic head coach in 2012, Ewing was hired to work for Steve Clifford with the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets in 2013, to which he is currently still employed.
Ewing would be a well known name to the Grizzlies coaching staff, and maybe this is the opportunity that Ewing will need to break out of the assistant coach mold. Time will tell.
