Malik Beasley went #27 overall to the Toronto Raptors earlier today, and now the Phoenix Suns and their Mock GM Kyle Whittington are back on the clock!
With the 28th pick in the 2016 GBB Community NBA Mock Draft, the Phoenix Suns select...
Damian Jones, Center, Vanderbilt University
(Jim Brown- USA Today Sports)
Here is Kyle's thought process on the pick-
With their third first round pick, Phoenix is going to grab Damien Jones, a center out of Vandy. Jones is 6'11.5" in shoes with almost a 7'4" wing span, and he weighs 250 pounds. Averaging 13.9 pts and 6.9 rebounds a game on 59.5% shooting his junior year led him to All-SEC First Team honors. Jones is an interesting prospect because of his height, athleticism, and touch on the block. However, he has a lot to work on. He shot just 54% from the free throw line last season, which was down from the 61% he shot the season before, and he made just 26% of his jump shots as well. If he wants to have a more polished game, he should work on both those areas. He is also weirdly inconsistent and has the tendency to disappear at certain points in a game.
Defensively, he has great tools, and even blocked 2.5 shots per 40 minutes, but he doesn't have great on ball defensive instincts and can be passive on defense. He also needs to work on pulling down defensive rebounds more consistently to be a good NBA player. All in all, Jones is a very interesting player who has the tools and the intelligence to be a very good basketball player, he just needs to put some work into developing it.
Tomorrow we finish our Community Mock Draft with the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors!
