The Memphis Grizzlies have had quite the 2016 NBA Draft, and they finished it out at #57 overall with the selection of Wang Zhelin of Fuijan. He was 7'0", 250 pounds in 2012 according to DraftExpress and was not even on Chip Williams' big board for us at GBB.
Memphis will draft Wang Zhelin of Fujian with the No. 57 pick in the NBA draft.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 24, 2016
Do you remember Janis Timma? He was taken late in the second round a few years ago, and never played a second for the Memphis Grizzlies in a meaningful NBA game. He played in Summer League, and looked awful, and evetually was traded away and somehow magically turned in to Matt Barnes.
That is likely the end game for Zhelin. He is an asset. A likely NBA afterthought. A guy who will likely be used as a piece to trade somewhere down the road. And that is OK! Those guys have value too, and Zhelin will continue to make a living for himself overseas. This changes nothing for him, outside of the Grizzlies having his rights (until some other team has them later via trade).
Wade Baldwin. Deyonta Davis. Those two players will likely be on Memphis' roster in 2016-2017 or in Iowa with the Grizzlies' D-League affiliate the Energy. Wang Zhelin? Hopefully the stuff of future trade legend.
