Vegas says the Grizzlies will win 43.5 games this season

I hate it, but I wish it weren't so realistic.

The Westgate Superbook has determined the fates of NBA teams for the 2016-17 season, and according to them the Memphis Grizzlies will be an entire game and a half better than they were in 2015-16.

The predictive mark for this year is 43.5 wins compared to the 50.5 wins predicted last year and the 42 they actually won last season. That’s a steep drop. Las Vegas apparently thinks that the addition of Chandler Parsons (and further aging of everyone else) will land the Grizzlies just one more game.5 in the win column, and that’s pretty sobering if you were still drunk on the summer fun.

Memphis was decimated by an incredibly unlucky string of injuries last season, and given the low expectation by Vegas for the Grizzlies to exceed that endeavor, I’d have to guess they’re predicting a really slow return from Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, or they might just be banking on the aging (and sometimes fragile) roster breaking down again over the span of the season.

Each Grizzlies season for the past few years has seemed to gain exponential amounts of “boom or bust” potential. I know I’d like to think that the planets could align and they could plow out 55 wins, but with the veteran core that much older and a new wave of young players (hopefully) waiting to be developed...I can see where the 43.5 makes sense to odds makers. With Gasol, Conley and, Parsons all having legitimate health questions, the Grizzlies could (IMO) be a blink of an eye away from their lowest winning percentage since 2008-09.

There’s a lot to digest, but thankfully we know Vegas can be very wrong. They were 8.5 games too generous to us last year so maybe they’ll be 8.5 too stingy this time around.

Here are the Southwest Division Odds:

San Antonio Spurs 1/7
