Today was already going to be an sentimental day for Grizzly fans and Tony Allen. It will be his first game since 2010 inside FedExForum in which he’s not wearing the #9 Grizzlies uniform. To show his appreciation to the Grizzlies and their fans for the last 7 years, Tony posted an article on The Players’ Tribune earlier this morning titled “Memphis” and it is as amazing as you would expect a Tony Allen written article to be. The article shows that Memphis meant as much to Tony as he did to the city of Memphis.
It’s been an touching few days for Tony and the Grizzlies. It all started with the Grizzlies announcing Tony’s #9 will one day be hung from the rafters in FedExForum (likely right next to the #50 jersey of his good friend Zach Randolph). The announcement lead many Grizzlies fans to shower TA with love and appreciation, and the honor clearly got TA a little emotional:
Last Friday was challenging for fans seeing TA sit on the Pelicans bench inside the Forum for the final preseason game. However, nothing will compare to the emotions that will be inside FedExForum tonight. From the first time TA steps on the court to the tribute video, tonight will be a special night in Memphis.
All Heart. Grit & Grind. Welcome back, Tony. And thanks for everything.
