Ugly Revenge: Grizzlies beat the Mavericks 96-91

Gasol leads the way with 25

NBA: Dallas Mavericks at Memphis Grizzlies Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

The Grizzlies came into tonights game 3-1 and looking for revenge against the Mavericks for the beat down that Dallas put on Memphis just last night. Back to back are always weird for the NBA, but it gets even stranger when you play the same team back to back in the regular season. The first possession started off like you expect it with a triple team from the Mavericks on Marc Gasol who missed the shot, eventually got it back and nailed a three.

The Grizzlies struggled with their defense through the first half of the first quarter allowing the Mavericks to get to the rim easily. The Mavericks picked up where they left off last night by putting Jarell Martin in a high pick and roll to get the matchup that they like. Jarell Martin answered back with two threes within a few minutes of each other early in the first quarter. Mike Conley continued to struggle in the first quarter going 1 for 4 with only 2 points.

As the first quarter continued the Grizzlies ratcheted up their defense behind a steal from Chalmers and a finish by James Ennis. Marc Gasol was aggressive early with 11 points and 5 rebounds in the first quarter. Once the reserves came in for the Grizzlies, the offense stalled, with only two bench player scoring three buckets in the first quarter.

The second quarter started off with a Chandler Parsons three over Dirk, just how you though it would. The bench unit continued to play good defense, especially Parsons, as he got switched onto Dirk and JJ Barea several times. Mario Chalmers put not one but two defenders on skates for some pretty assists.

The bench unit played great defense throughout the second quarter, getting the lead up to twenty two at one point in the second quarter. Dillon Brooks dropped in 7 points and 3 rebounds in just over 9 minutes. The Mavericks went through a shooting slump in the second quarter. They were getting a lot of really good looks from all around the court, even a point blank range, but they just kept missing.

Once Mike Conley returned he continued to struggle on the court, missing several shots. Conley did a great job getting to the rim at times, but either passed out of shots, or just missed them. The Grizzlies went super small at the end of the second quarter, with Jarell Martin playing center. Mike Conley finally got another three ball to go down, ending with 9 first half points, but the Marc Gasol led the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds in the first half. It was very much a defensive quarter for the Grizzlies, without much offense only scoring 16 points through the first 8 minutes with a flurry of threes to end the quarter. That defense gave them a halftime lead of 54-35.

Marc Gasol continued his great play through the third quarter dropping in 8 points through the first six minutes of the quarter. As good as Marc was in the third, Andrew Harrison continued miss shots and turn the ball over. Harrison was 0 for 4 with 2 points from free throws throughout the game. Harrison also struggled on defense, getting caught ball watching several times.

Mike Conley dropped in two more buckets in the third quarter, bringing him to 13 points for the game up to this point. The Grizzlies of course got bored of playing with a 20 point lead and decided to let the Mavericks back in the game. The Grizzlies played great defense to start the third quarter but that went away down the stretch, allowing the Mavericks to close within five at one point late in the third quarter. Tyreke continued to play well dropping in 13 points throughout the game. He even dropped in a beautiful crossover to give the Grizzlies a 8 point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Tyreke started off the fourth quarter just like he ended the third quarter, with a beautiful three ball in a defenders face. Evans followed that up with another three over a defender. Dillon Brooks is a really good defender for a rookie and showed up late in the third and beginning of the fourth quarter, defending several different players on the court at different times. The Grizzlies started to play too much one on one with Tyreke and Mario Chalmers, and the lead shrank to just 5 points again in the game.

Marc Gasol and Mike Conley promptly came into the game to get the offense back on track. The Grizzlies kept shooting too many threes and the Mavs kept making them pulling the game within 2 points. The Grizzlies struggled to pass the ball well, and just plain make shots late in the fourth quarter, from 22 down the Mavericks regained lead with 4 minutes left. When the Grizzlies need a bucket, Mike Conley delivers a much needed three pointer to take the lead right back.

Mike Conley may continue to struggle in the games, but he is there when you need down the stretch. Conley was getting into the lane at will in the final minutes getting people open looks or scoring at the rim. Marc Gasol led the team with 25 points and 13 rebounds, Conley dropped in 22 and Tyreke scored 19 of the bench. The Mavericks tried to make it a game late in the fourth quarter, but the Grizzlies would not let them. They get their revenge win against the Mavericks ________
