The game started out okay for the Grizzlies. Memphis forced Indiana into 5 turnovers in the first 4 minutes.
After that, not so much.
The Pacers went on a 19-8 run to close out the 1st quarter to lead 26-17 after the first. The majority of the damage done was inside scoring as Indiana out-rebounded the Grizzlies by more than double and dominated in the paint 36-10 in the 1st half alone. Indiana at one point led by 25 in the 2nd quarter until Garrett Temple hit some threes to close the quarter giving him 12 points at halftime going 4-6 from the field, all from long-range. Temple was the lone bright spot offensively for Memphis in the 1st half as he was the only Grizzly in double figures in the first half.
The Pacers took a 56-39 lead into halftime. Bojan Bogdanovic and Domantas Sabonis dominated for the Pacers in the 1st half with Bogdanovic going 5-for-5 from the floor and Sabonis going off for 10 points and 9 boards.
The Grizzlies did a better job of luring Indiana into making some mental mistakes, getting into the bonus about 4:30 into the 3rd, but it didn’t have a huge impact as the Pacers maintained their lead through much of the 3rd. Marc Gasol did however drop in 13 points in the 3rd by going 7-of-8 from the free throw line, and making 2 shots from the field. Overall in the 3rd the Grizzlies only made 3 baskets from the floor, but luckily went 11-13 from the free throw line to keep the Pacers from totally running away.
Indiana started off the 4th quarter hot, outscoring Memphis 17-6 in the first 5:42 of the quarter to take a 29 point lead, their biggest of the night at that point. In the end the Pacers would finish the Grizzlies, eventually leading by 32 en route to their 28 point victory.
Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 13 points, all of which came in the 3rd quarter. Temple was next with 12, and Mike Conley had 11. In the game, Memphis shot only 29% from the floor and were dominated down low by the Pacers. Indiana outrebounded the Grizzlies 57-28 and outscored them in the paint 60-16.
Indiana had 7 players score in double figures, including a double-double from Domantas Sabonis (14 points, 15 rebounds). Bojan Bogdanovic led the Pacers in scoring with 19 points, while Victor Oladipo added 16 points. Former Grizzly Tyreke Evans scored 14 in his first matchup with his former team.
- Dillon Brooks played only 6:17 in the game, getting one shot attempt and committed 1 foul and 1 turnover.
- Jaren Jackson Jr. made his regular season debut going 2-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line for 10 points. Jaren was the only Grizzly other than Marc Gasol that made a shot from the floor in the 3rd quarter.
- Chandler Parsons played 22:33 but only shot 3-of-9 from the floor and 0-of-5 from 3 for 6 points.
The Grizzlies will be back in action on Friday at FedExForum looking to bounce back in their home opener against Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks.
