The Grizzlies came into the matchup on Monday night looking to extend their win streak to four games against the Dallas Mavericks and rookie sensation Luka Doncic. The Grizzlies started the game through the first part of the game missing a lot of shots, but really shutting down the offense of the Mavericks outside of a few three pointers from Dorian Finney-Smith. Grizzlies get a lot of contributions from several players in the first quarter with 7 players scoring points.
The second quarter was the Jaren Jackson Jr. show, amid chaos and subpar play from offense at times, he was there cleaning up and scoring buckets. Marc Gasol was able to get in the scoring coloumn with a couple of great post ups, making the Mavericks pay for using a much smaller defender on him but then there was the part of the quarter that the Grizzlies offense just stopped altogether and they had to rely on their defense to get through it. Down the stretch of the second quarter, Mike Conley did what he does best, hit a three while getting fouled to give the Grizzlies the lead going into the half. ‘
The Mavericks come out and scored six quick points, which forced a timeout from the Grizzlies, but then Mike Conley picked up where he left off in the first half keeping this Grizzlies team in the game, hitting several threes in the third quarter. Beyond Mike Conley shooting really well in the third and JaMychal Green giving the Grizzlies some much needed help on offense, the defense once again is what kept them in the game.
The fourth quarter like the third one ended, a game very much in the mud, with the Grizzlies getting very little from their bench outside of JaMychal Green. Mike Conley was there to make sure that they stayed on course though hitting several three pointers and setting up Mack and Temple for three pointers of their own. Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are the reasons, once again, that this Grizzlies team is winning basketball games.
Some quick thoughts:
- Jaren Jackson Jr. is special. JJJ continues to be good at basketball especially off the dribble from the perimeter, his ability to drive to basket and be able to make baskets around defenders at odd angles is the most impressive thing about the rookie so far this year.
- JayMychal Green was missed. JaMychal Green’s secondary offense has been missed and is something the Grizzlies quietly needed, along with his rebounding, it’s his secondary plays that go under the radar but help this basketball team out tremendously.
- Mike Conley. Mike Conley is still really good at this basketball thing hitting 7 threes in tonights game and leading the way on the offensive end with 28 points.
