Recap: Memphis outhustles the Legends

The shorthanded Hustle beat the Legends in a shootout

NBA: Washington Wizards at Memphis Grizzlies Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

The Hustle returned home to the Landers Center looking to extend their 3 game winning streak after dominating the defending G-League champ Austin Spurs behind Ivan Rabb’s monster 31 point, 14 rebound performance. Standing in the way of a Hustle 4-game winning streak was Trashon Burrell and the Texas Legends. Burrell was just recently signed by the Legends after spending part of last season with the Hustle and his collegiate career with the Memphis Tigers. Burrell would not actually play in the game, as he has to complete his 3 game suspension that was handed down on him due to an altercation in February while with the Hustle.

The Hustle were without Jevon Carter, D.J. Stephens, Markel Crawford and Yuta Watanabe so look for Rabb to try and carry the Hustle in their absence.

1st Quarter

Both teams started the games shooting lights out. The Hustle made their first 7 shots, while the Legends started out 3-5 from from beyond the arc. It was a well balanced scoring effort for the Hustle, with 8 players getting in the scoring column by the end of the quarter. It was a one possession game most of the quarter as the Hustle finished the quarter with a 32-31 lead. The Hustle were led by Tarik Phillip and Ismalia Kane who both scored 6 points a piece in the quarter. Ray Spalding kept the Legends in the game with a game high 7 points.

2nd Quarter

The second quarter didn’t start off well for the Hustle as the Legends opened up the quarter on a 8-0 run. The Hustle were able to respond nicely to the Legends run with a run of their own to get back in the game. The 2nd quarter was much like the first, this time with the Legends holding a one possession lead most of the quarter. The Hustle got hot from beyond the arc in the last couple of minutes in the half, resulting in them heading to the locker room with a 70-66 halftime lead.

The Hustle were led by Tyler Harvey’s 15 points (3-3 from beyond the arc) and Ivan Rabb’s 11 points and 5 rebounds. Legends were carried by Frank Jackson’s 20 points, with Ray Spalding dropping 13 points in the half.

3rd Quarter

The Hustle opened up the second half with a run to build their lead to double digits. Ivan Rabb scored 8 quick points in the quarter while Tarik Phillip wreaked havoc on the defensive end. The Hustle had no answer for Frank Jackson with Jevon Carter out as Jackson led a Legends charge to tie the game back up. Jackson ended the quarter with 31 points for the Legends, while Daryl Macon had a 12 point quarter to build his scoring total to 18 points.

The Hustle got a great quarter from Tarik Phillip who picked up a couple of steals and dropped 9 points. Phillip’s effort was just enough for the Hustle to end the quarter with a 3 point lead, 97-94.

4th Quarter

The Legends started the 4th similar to the way they started the 3rd, with a run to give them the lead. The Hustle were able to come back and tie the game midway through the quarter thanks to Dusty Hannahs and Tyler Harvey. Tyler Harvey kept the hot shooting going, helping the Hustle regain the lead with 4 minutes remaining. The Hustle defense, lacking throughout most of the game, picked up the intensity late forcing a handful of Legends turnovers to help clinch the 134-125 win to push their win streak to 4 games.

The Hustle got a career high from Tyler Harvey who dropped 29 points to go with 4 assists and 2 steals. Ivan Rabb had a double double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.

It was a nice win for the shorthanded Hustle who continue to get production from guys like Tyler Harvey in the absence of their core players.
