Report: Memphis Grizzlies acquire Kelly Oubre Jr. as part of three-team deal

Welcome to Memphis, Wave Papi.

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies at Washington Wizards Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

As the Grizzlies-Heat game was ending (a 100-97 loss for Memphis), multiple reports were breaking of the Memphis Grizzlies making a pretty major trade with the Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards.

The Grizzlies receive Kelly Oubre Jr.

The Suns receive MarShon Brooks, Wayne Selden Jr., a 2020 2nd round pick and a conditional 2019 2nd round pick from Memphis

The Wizards receive Trevor Ariza

This trade is a gigantic win for the Memphis Grizzlies. Kelly Oubre, whose stats this season will not wow you (13 points per game, but on 31.5% shooting from three and 43.3% shooting overall), fits the profile of what Memphis is looking for in players. He is versatile, able to play both on the perimeter and as a stretch four. He is young - 23, and in line for a reasonable extension (perhaps a Kyle Anderson-esque one). He is a lottery level talent who is not yet at his prime and can score for a Grizzlies team that desperately needs scoring.

Oubre’s role is obviously yet to be determined, and this trade cannot be completed until midnight due to NBA rules. But once it is complete, the Grizzlies will have gotten a young and gifted wing for a reasonably low price. Wayne Selden Jr. and MarShon Brooks are talented, but with Dillon Brooks returning soon Memphis had a glut of wings and was likely looking for an upgrade.

They just got one.

Stay tuned to GBB for more updates in the coming days as this story develops.

9:38 PM CT UPDATE: There are disputed reports over whether or not it is MarShon or Dillon Brooks being traded to the Suns. This story will be updated once the final report comes.
