Sometimes, you just have to laugh to stop yourself from crying.
The Memphis Grizzlies were reported to possibly be signing Austin Rivers about two hours ago. Since that time, we have gone from that being a real possibility to this, from the Daily Memphian’s Chris Herrington...
Unlike on Friday night, I reluctantly put up a story on the reported Rivers signing before getting my own confirmation, but want to underscore, as I did in the story, that I have *not* been able to independently confirm it.— Chris Herrington (@HerringtonNBA) December 18, 2018
...to this from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, who originally reported the Rivers news...
Four to five other teams are still expressing interest in Rivers, sources said. No formal offer yet from Memphis, with several days until Rivers clears waivers. https://t.co/RUkLDrVqJF— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) December 18, 2018
...back to Chris Herrington, with the knockout blow...
Now hearing from a source that the Grizzlies will not be signing Austin Rivers.— Chris Herrington (@HerringtonNBA) December 18, 2018
The Grizzlies have been involved in some crazy stuff the past several days.
It is quite possible, perhaps likely, that this had nothing to do with the Grizzlies at all. Shams made a report (that Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN did not, mind you - usually they’re 1A and 1B on these reports) and it went from “he is going to Memphis” to “Memphis has not even offered him”. While Charania is young, he may have made a mistake here.
OR, Memphis is looking for something more, like where an information leak is coming from...but that is pure speculation and is unlikely. The far more probable piece to this is a rush to report gone wrong. Regardless, it would appear that the Grizzlies are actually not in the market for Austin Rivers after all. There goes the article I was writing about his fit and how he could be a potential upgrade for the team, if the right perspective was given to his acquisition...ah well.
After the events of the past few days, GBB will do a better job moving forward confirming reports ourselves through sources/being patient when no source is available before moving along reports. We as an outlet for Grizzlies information should be, and will be, better moving forward. You deserve that as our readers and community.
